Contemporary English Theater -- Plays in Performance was a course taught by Christopher Sykes, who teaches writing and theater studies at the universities of Oxford and Warwick. I attended the program at Rewley House as part of the two-week travel/study program sponsored by the UNC General Alumni Association and Duke Alumni Association. Attending the class was truly an enriching activity. I grew as a student far more in this class than any literature/drama class that I had ever attended because of the superior teaching of Skyes and how he makes each class, play, character, action, line so meaningful. He teaches by involving students (rather than by lecturing) and guiding them to experience plays as they are experienced by the writers, actors and directors. You learn by reading a script and envisaging how it would be performed before attending an actual performance, and his class exercises are innovative. This course is one of the best.

Recently I had the honor of attending a course at Rewley House taught by the noted playwright,Chris Sykes. The English Detective Mysteries course began with a study of Agatha Christie's first "closed door" murder mystery and ended with the Baroness P.D.James' latest "high teck."novel.The Baroness came to the class and shared stories of her life as a Mystery Writer .This was truly a most interesting experience as she compared the first Murder Mystery Novels to the more recent ones, noting how the plots have changed to reflect the times.Professor Sykes arranged a Sherlock Holmes tour of the bowels of London during which we visited the places noted in Holmes novels, along Baker Street, ending with a period meal at the "Sherlock Holmes Tavern".The courses at Kellogg College are highly recommended. There are courses at every level of learning.
