“Trendy wine bar although the music was a let down”

The Oxford Wine Cafe
Ranked #791 of 1,923 Restaurants in Oxfordshire
Price range: USD 4 - USD 1,378
Description: We love our wine and our mission is to bring you the best examples from all over the world, made by smaller, ultra passionate boutique style producers who are not interested in selling their lovingly hand crafted products to the supermarkets or big high street chains. We believe that wine should be fun and that everyone's tastes are different - hence our large selection of wines at great prices. Tasting is a subjective experience and we are keen to introduce you to wines that suit you personally. Accordingly our staff are always able to help by giving extra information on the wines and help you make the best choices for you. Our events are always informal, fun and suitable for anyone - not just people who 'know about wine!' We hope that you will find our Oxford Wine Cafés to be small havens of quality in an increasingly busy world where you can meet friends and enjoy the wines you want at a great price. All our wines are served in top quality Riedel glassware to enhance your tasting experience and regular informal tasting events take place at our Summertown branch presented by Winemakers, Journalists and Masters of Wine. Theo Sloot also presents his popular and humorous introduction to wine, Theo's Tasty Tuesdays here too. Both venues offer private tastings for you and both offer private hire for your own events. We look forward to seeing you soon!

This was vibrant place with a wide range of wine selections to choose from. The place was beautifully decorated. However, we were disappointed with the music which was sort of party/dance. It was too noisy and didn't go well with the candle lights surrounded the cafe!

Dear keepcalmandreview,

Thank you for your review. We pride ourselves in our ability to adapt to different nights of the week or time in the day. Monday to Thursday are usually quieter nights with Friday and Saturday nights being a lot more busy. We try to appease all parties on the music front but unfortunately tastes vary so much that we can't please everyone. I will suggest that you come during the week to enjoy a few glasses of wine when we are quieter and have more jazzy music playing.

We hope to see you again!

While this is a nice place, and the service and quality of the wines is more than acceptable, we were forced to sit on what must be some of the most uncomfortable stools that my bum has ever graced.

Dear Mike M,

Thank you for your second review of the Oxford Wine Cafe. You obviously like coming here! Yet another 3/5, what a shame. You seemed to have valued us a star less than last time, strange as our prices haven't risen.

We handpick our house wines 5 times a year after much debate with 6 managers and directors with a veto policy in order to get a list that is perfect for the consumer and accommodates all tastes. What a disappointment that you deemed our wines only acceptable, maybe ask our staff to try a few more before you buy a glass, that way to can be sure you have made the right choice. With 130 wines there must be one for you!

I'm sorry you didn't find our stools comfortable. I'm assuming you meant the wooden high stools not the cushion bar stools, have a little sit on them and your bum will be loving it!

All the very best and no doubt see you again soon for another review.

Great selection, pricy but good. Nice vibe all day, from laptop workers to post work drinks, only wish they had fine cheeses and port to go with proceedings

Hi SurfingUK,

Thanks for the review. We do feel we have very competitive prices in the area, however we do try and aim for a certain market therefore can sometimes seem unreasonable. We do also have a range of 5 cheeses and 2 ports by the glass so do please try them next time you visit us.

Many Thanks,

Popped in here for a cheeky afternoon glass with my brothers while visiting oxford. Excellent selection of wines and really interesting and engaged staff. I did not feel patronised as a relative novice to wine and our selections were treated with the same value and care as many of the higher paying patrons. A mixed crowd in this packed but spacious bar. We enjoyed our chatting and people watching immensely from the comfort of a window seat.
If you like your wine, this is a great place to indulge your tastebuds!

Came here on a Friday afternoon into evening to meet my sister for a drink and ended up having some food. The staff are attentive and really friendly, and experienced enough to give you some guidance and their menu. The coffee is superb and the wine was fantastic (the malbec was a personal favourite). Food was week priced and tasty, so overall I can't recommend this place enough.
