Description: La Vecchia Scuola is a unique dining experience that can be found in Low Petergate, York very close to the Minster. An amazing restaurant set in a 300 year old Georgian building that was once York college for girls. This restaurant is now operated by new owners from February 2013. It has an innovative new menu with all food sourced locally and prepared for customer onsite.

We had come to York for my husbands birthday and wanted to find a nice restaurant to celebrate so we spent an hour walking around looking for a suitable place to book.
As we were looking at the menu outside, a group of people were just leaving and highly recommended it so we booked there and then and we weren’t disappointed.
The venue, the service and the food was outstanding and great value for money.
We ate from the set menu which was 3 courses. Everything was homemade and cooked to our liking. The food was well presented and hot.
We would highly recommend this restaurant.

We stumbled across this lovely place as we walked through wet York on Saturday afternoon looking for somewhere to eat on the evening. We booked for 6.00 and were glad we did. It was very busy but we were shown quickly to our table overlooking a garden and promptly served drinks. We shared a garlic pizza bread to start which was delicious and then both had rump steak - asked for and served perfectly rare. Good house wine too. The service was excellent - all waitresses and waiter attentive.
It was so good we booked again for Monday evening as we leaving.
This time we both are from the set menu - my wife took the pate followed by lasagne and I had king prawns (served in an arribiata sauce) and a main of lamb skewers with shared potatoes. Tirimisu for dessert accompanied with espresso.
Again good house red and beer (moretti)
Can't fault this place and will definitely go again when in York

I have visited here on previous occasions and it's always great. Lovely inside and we got a table in the conservatory for the first time which was nice. Staff very friendly and a lovey chilled atmosphere. A shame the pianist wasn't playing when we were there this time. Food was great, we had prawn cocktail and bruschetta to start followed by fillet steak (which my boyfriend said was one of the best steaks he has ever had) and I had the chicken and mushroom risotto. It was really nice, apart from a few bits of gristle in the chicken. Would still definitely recommend.

We booked a table in the conservatory on line which turned out to be a good move as the restaurant was full and this was for lunch on a Wednesday!
We last visited in August last year and can honestly say the food and service have remained excellent. Sadly so has the state of the toilets which I continue to say are disgusting which is such a shame for a very good restaurant. Because of this I’ve bumped my rating down to 4 stars.
Come on management do something about it your customers deserve better !!

Returned to La Vecchia Scuola after a very enjoyable meal, sadly this wasn’t a repeat experience, starter of pork belly was delicious, and one main of mixed seafood was tasty and very generous, sadly the rack of lamb was over cooked on the underside and raw on the topside. Having to ask for a steak knife, which couldn’t cut through the meat without an unnecessary amount of force was beyond disappointing. Lamb cooked rare and pink on the inside is great when done well but raw badly cooked meat is another thing.
Having made a complaint we were then ignored for the rest of our meal, noticeable poor service!
