“Great break in York”
Reviewed 12 March 2012

Just returned from a two night break in York staying at Hedley House hotel. Had a really great weekend and the hotel certainly didn't let us down.
We arrived on Friday afternoon after finding the hotel easily and were shown to the car park area. We found it easy to park and didn't need to move the car all weekend. This is definitely a plus as parking is scarce, and expensve in York.
We were shown to our room by a very pleasant lady and although the room wasn't quite ready it only took a few minutes to resolve. The room itself was lovely. Big fireplace and huge bed (turned out to be two singles but wasn't at all uncomfortable) and a spare bed next to the window. Room was spotlessly clean as was the bathroom with good power shower.
Our room was on a high floor and with no lift I wouldn't recommend for anyone with mobility problems. It didn't bother us but just be warned that the stairs are quite steep if you might have a problem with this.
Our room was at the front of the hotel overlooking the railway line. I thought this would be really noisy but we weren't bothered by the trains. The only time it was noisy was on the early hours of Sunday morning with a few drunken revellers returning to a near by hotel who probably thought they were 'whispering'.
We had breakfast at the hotel both mornings and it was delicious. Nothing was too much trouble and the service was great considering how busy the restaurant was. We also ate at the hotel on the Friday night and this again was delicious with losts of choice and the service was good and very friendly. Having eaten in York on the Saturday night and being dissapointed we wished we had eaten in the hotel again that night. I know there are plenty of restaurants to choose from in York but think it would be hard to beat the meal we had on Friday in the hotel. Compliments to the chef.
York itself is only a short stroll away and the road is well lit so we felt very safe even coming back at night.
We got a really good deal for the hotel and would definitely return if could get a similar deal. Not sure that we would pay the full price though as a bit steep for somewhere with no leisure facilities.
All in all though I would definitely recommend this hotel and will keep an eye out for a good deal so we can return to York.

Room Tip: Room 24 lovely and spacious but it is on an upper floor so no good if you have mobility issues. Lar...

The fantastic staff at Hedley House once again made our visit to York an excellent one. Nice and big rooms and comfy beds. Excellent breakfast with a good selection of eggs and cereals etc. Very conveniently situated with everything this fabulous city has to offer within easy walking distance. Highly recommendable!

Just returned from a great weekend break at Hedley House. Booked via KGB at an amazing rate of £99 for 2 for the whole weekend including parking. The room was a little tight - getting round the bottom of the bed wasn't easy, but hey at those rates let's not get picky.
Had dinner at the hotel on the Friday night, again very good pate and smoked salmon starters followed by a tasty coq au vin and an excellent lanb leg steak. Included was a free bottle of wine with the offer. Breakfast was cooked to order with plenty of choice.
Easy 5-10 minute walk to Yorkminster and the centre. So pleasing to park the car on Friday and forget about it until departure.
Service throughout was excellent from the cheerful welcome by Sara through to the goodbyes with Louise.
Will definitely use this hotel next time I visit York

We've just returned from a 3 night hotel break in Yorkshire. One of our chosen stop overs was the hedley. I have to say we didn't eat there (not even at breakfast) and when we came back to the hotel at 10.30 expecting a night cap there was noone to be found, not even on reception. The staff we did see though were nice enough, the room was very big and clean but the mattresses definitely need changing.

The biggest upside to this hotel is the fact that it is in a great spot and has a car park. For this price bracket though I would expect something will a bit more style. Wouldn't go back

We are just back from a 2 night stay here and thought it was a great little hotel. We found it easily even though we weren't familiar with York and took advantage of the free parking which is a huge plus point for a city centre hotel. Our room was on the ground floor and was spacious, clean and nicely decorated. The only downside was that the fire door to the adjoining restaurant slams really, really loudly but to be honest I blame inconsiderate guests for this more than the hotel. Our first night we had noisy people in the room next to us who woke us up a few times (mainly by slamming the fire door and chatting outside our room) but they left the next morning so we slept like babies on our second night!

The room was absolutely spotless and the bathroom modern with a fab power shower. The room had a large flat screen TV, a hairdryer, iron and generously stocked tea/coffee tray. The facilities were much better than you usually get in similarly priced hotels so this was a nice surprise.

There are a few comments in previous reviews about uncomfy beds but all I can say is our room had the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in! I usually sleep really badly in hotels but our bed was just amazing and I slept better than I usually do at home!

It would have got 5 stars if it wasn't for the noisy firedoor (it is really, really loud) but I would definitely stay here again and just ask for a room not on the ground floor. I'll be recommending it to friends and family too. We didn't eat at the hotel as wanted to see as much of York as possible but the menu looked great and we'd happily eat here if we returned.

The location is excellent and it's only a 5 minute stroll from the city centre. There are plenty of shops, pubs and cafes within a few minutes walk and the area felt quiet and safe in the evenings.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on the ground floor due to other guests slamming noisy firedoors
