Owner description: William II laid the foundation to this abbey during the 11th century, which became known as the most powerful and wealthiest monastery in the North of England at that time.

We have the privilege of being able to park just off Marygate, the street lying behind the Abbey. Quite recently the owners of its site in the York Museum Gardens have opened up a gateway for us, so that we can walk through their newly established edible garden, which is behind the Art Gallery. This access makes our walks through to the centre of York via Museum Street, Lendal and Coney Street a great pleasure. A recent visit occurred when a blanket of snow lay on York and the Abbey ruins were even more of a delight than ever. Visitors and locals alike should not miss this sight, one of the best in York, which is itself, of course, one of the best places to visit in the United Kingdom!

The history of St Mary's Abbey is detailed in the Yorkshire Museum next door so we were glad we had done the museum first before walking around the Abbey . Popular site for wedding photos , three bride and grooms on site while we were there !

Right by the University of York, Department of Archaeology, these Norman ruins are highly underrated in my opinion. It's totally free to walk around and take pictures, with an adjacent garden that is quite beautiful. The surrounding area does not have as many tourists, and I was able to take photos completely uninterrupted. There is also a lot of history behind these ruins, with historians who claim it brought about the inspiration for the Sheriff of Nottingham in the Robin Hood story. I recommend going here with a guide if possible, as there is a plenty to learn about the Abbey's significance. Must see if you're in York.
