A haven of peace in the best city in the United Kingdom - no-one should miss this delightful spot, overlooking the River Ouse. It is especially attractive for families, but as locals we enjoy it through the seasons, especially as the gardens are so well tended. Nor should you miss visiting St Olave's Church, which is right behind the truins of St Mary's Abbey and set into its walls (often mistaken for the City Walls). Here the beauty, peace and calm of the gardens continue, with their spiritual element underlined. Christian or not, please go and be refreshed.

Attracts thousands of grass sitters in the summer and on nice days, a pavilion around the back and some ancient ruins which look nice

We explored the old Abbey remains after visiting the museum and then walked around the gardens down to the riverside walk . Great place to chill out

Just walking around the grounds of the museum is a good way to soak up the atmosphere. The ruins of St. Mary's Abbey and the history of why it is in the shape it is in gives you perspective. Then there is the what remains of the Roman tower. Great photo ops and that doesn't even includes the amazing plant specimens they have on display. We also found it to be a much needed break from the hustle and bustle of the city. And with it being right on Museum Street it could not have been more convenient.
