“Lovely little cottage”
Reviewed 17 September 2016 for a stay in August 2016

This is a lovely little cottage, perfectly situated in Whitby for easy access to the town, abbey, beach and station. Its setting in one of the yards running off the cobbled part of Church Street means you have a lovely quiet setting, yet it's less than a minute away from the hustle and bustle of this very popular part of Church Street.
Inside, the cottage is compact downstairs, but for 2 adults and 1 child we had plenty of room. Similarly, the bedrooms were small but all of this just adds to the cosy and quaint feel.
If there is one thing in particular that I want to mention about our experience overall, it would be the information given before arrival on the access arrangements. We arrived on a Tuesday afternoon at around 4.00 after a 6 hour drive to find Whitby absolutely heaving with people, such that we missed 2 turns of the green light trying to cross the bridge due to the number of people walking on the road. Church Street itself is very long and, as Google maps doesn't show the location of the yard, we had no idea which part of the street it was on. We pulled into the public car park, which was completely full, and were lucky enough to speak to a council worker, who told us where it is. Not knowing Whitby at all we had no idea that the cobbled part of Church Street is a narrow pedestrian precinct, packed with people. Trying to drive down there with people looking at us in disgust, and meanwhile trying to find the exact location of the yard, is one of the most stressful situations I've experienced. Turning round was impossible, so after having unloaded we then had to repeat the ordeal in reverse. After we'd settled ourselves in, we found an information folder which advised guests to arrive after 6.00pm and to leave before 9.00am but, for us, this information came too late! It would have been great if it could have been included in the message we had received beforehand.
Several people commented in the guest book that the shower needs attention. We found that if you like a hot shower it's absolutely fine. If you like a warm or cool shower, however, the boiler cuts out as soon as you turn up the cold water tap, so that you then end up with a freezing cold shower. I'm sure the thermostat setting could be easily adjusted to solve this minor problem.
My final comment is about my daughter's duvet. On the final morning you are asked to strip the beds and place the linen in the bath. On removing my daughter 's duvet cover I found that the duvet was heavily stained in several places with stale urine. I was really shocked and disgusted! A single duvet will fit in most domestic washing machines these days, so it shouldn't have been necessary to put it on a guest's bed in this condition.
I'm sorry to end this review on a negative note. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Shilling Cottage and would still recommend it to other guests.

We booked Shilling Cottage at very short notice and were very happy with our choice - it is situated in a lovely quiet area down one of the yards, and we could not fault the location. We really liked the quaint old feel of the cottage, with the spiral staircase and wooden floors. The bed was very comfortable and we slept really well throughout our stay! Everything was very clean and we had everything we needed for our stay. We would definitely stay at Shilling Cottage again!
