We'd booked at the Chartwell without seeing it, and there was a little bit of trepidation as we'd seen a handful of less-than-complimentary reviews. However, from the off these worries were put to rest. The retreat was spotlessly clean, wonderfully located at the heart of Whitby's 'Abbey side', and very spacious. We stayed as a family of four - two parents, a four-year-old and a small baby - and it more than fitted us in comfortably.
Even one of the few things that hadn't quite gone to plan - there was no parking voucher - was dealt with so enthusiastically and professionally that it only served to impress us all the more (it also meant we had to go to the Blitz Cafe below, which comes highly recommended). The TV worked excellently and had a very good selection of channels, particularly for our four-year-old, and all the kitchen stuff was well stocked and easy to use. The bathroom was very clean and the shower was effective too (I know that's an odd thing to pick out, but I've lost count of the number of places I've stayed where the shower is a mere 'trickle'). If I'm nit-picking, the Wi-Fi password in the guidebook isn't really legible, but that's a very, very minor quibble in a sea of positives.
I'd recommend this accommodation to anyone, but it really is superb for families. I can only assume that the more negative reviews are based on a time before Beckie was running things. As it stands, this place is a hidden gem.
Stayed at Chartwell Retreat Sun and Mon night for the Whitby Regatta. The cottage itself is lovely and in a fab location, well equipped and decorated. The front door is stiff, but easily opened with a good shoulder barge. The owner is really helpful, answering messages quickly and kept in touch regularly prior to the stay. Would definately recommend.
