Hoffmann Kiln - Craven Lime Works
Reviewed 7 September 2017 via mobile

A really good place to visit. I was glad that you can still gain access to the inside of the kiln. I was pleased to see almost no vandalism.

Trail was good, good esplanation of everything. Mind you though: after the rain it's a bit wet all over :)

This is an amazing site, the scale of it has to be seen to be believed. It is worth spending time exploring the whole site to get an insight into the work that went on here.

We had been told to look at the Hoffman Kiln as we were in the area. The map shows an interesting shape on the map... but we really didn't know what to expect.
In an area of woodland, there are three different abandoned lime kilns, the Hoffman Kiln is a man-made tunnel with a slightly uneven floor accesed by numerous side passages, of which one or two are bricked up, I assume as they were becomeing unsafe. Inside there is a tunnel looping around the structure, it took a little while for our eyes to become accustomed to the gloom and then we made our way around. The information signs outside explain how this was used; it must have been horrible unloading lime from this furnace after only two or three days to cool a little; with the furnace still buring a little further on.
Amazing piece of design, very atmospheric, spooky tunnel in the kiln, woodland setting, really interesting....
