We tried the Seagrass last night after reading a reviews online, and I'm glad we did. Excellent amuse bouche, starters and mains and a wonderful cheese board to end the meal. The menu, while limited, is very thoughtfully put together. The only criticism I have of the evening was the wine -- and we brought it! Looking forward to returning again.

This place really is a find in Angel, worth making the journey for if your not staying locally. Showcasing the best of British produce the chef lets the quality ingedients do the talking and it really works. Yes, the menus limited but whats there is great quality, delivered at a good price with generous portions. The no frills approach works well in a unique venue. Couldnt fault it, and youve got to be happy with a place where you can check out the kitchen for yourself. BYOB no corkage hard to find and adds to the great value. Will go back with friends, great for group eating

Such a great idea - turning a 'pie & mash shop' by day into an intimate restaurant by night.

Staff at Seagrass are welcoming and friendly and greeted us with an 'amuse bouche' as we arrived. Candles and low lighting enhance the scrubbed wooden tables and beautiful tiled walls. I understand there is a preservation order on the building so any planned alterations will have to compliment the existing decor. A good thing.

You take your own wine, (which avoids disappointment) and is served with a smile.

The menu is short and comprised three starters, 2 mains and a cheeseboard, but all for an inclusive price of £30 - great value.

We sampled pigeon breast ( beautifully cooked) mussels ("the best I've eaten) and sea bass with beetroot risotto.

Well worth diverting from the main drag in Islington - this is a real find!

Seagrass is a semi-permanent restaurant set in Manzes pie and mash shop on Chapel Market, Islington. It's a brilliant idea - the pie and mash shop doesn't open in the evening so on Wednesday-Saturday evenings it opens its doors as Seagrass, serving a small, seasonal gourmet menu.

Don't expect any luxuries here - it's marble floors and battered wooden tables with wooden benches either side. The restaurant is in a pie and mash shop, after all! There's a certain charm to it though. You have to walk through the (massive) kitchen to get to the gents' toilet - don't know how health and safety would feel about it but I thought it was hilarious! Each table is a sort of booth and you can only sit about 6 people round it, so probably best to avoid groups bigger than that.

The menu is extremely small - the day I went there were three starters, two mains and two desserts - and the choices are fairly gourmet so it's definitely not for fussy eaters. Choices were pigeon breast with serrano ham and crispy potatoes (delicious) or some sort of smoked salmon dish to start, followed by duck or dressed crab for mains. Dessert choices were cheeseboard and sticky toffee pudding. All the food was excellent. Service was also very friendly.

The menu is set - it's £30 for 3 courses. For the quality of the food (and the ingredients, given that they serve fairly expensive options), that's perfectly reasonable, particularly as it's BYOB. There is a Waitrose just round the corner so you can pick up a decent bottle there if you don't have one at home.

Highly recommended.

We ate at the Seagrass on Friday 16th, the staff are really friendly and the atmosphere fantastic. The menu is well considered and 3 courses are £30, great value. Its BYO with no corkage - we will definitely be returning.

The seats - wooden and unforgiving if you have any back problems. I used my coat as a cushion. If you local, take a cushion!
