Neighbourhood: Spitalfields
Description: Situated on Spital Square next door to Michelin-starred Galvin La Chapelle, the modern bistrot Galvin HOP serves simple but innovative food in a relaxed and vibrant environment. The Galvin brothers gave HOP a little facelift this summer and the interiors are now brighter and funkier than before. It’s a more relaxed environment with colourful chairs surrounding light wooden tables. The menu has also evolved and the new HOP offers seasonally inspired dishes in A la carte format for lunch. Starters include tempura courgette flower with goat’s cheese, beetroot and pine nuts or breaded scallops with chorizo, celery and tarragon mayonnaise. For mains, choose from seasonal dishes such as lamb steak on the bone with peas, goat’s curd and Jersey royals or baked halibut with Kalamata olive, fregola and saffron aioli. For dinner, HOP offers a selection of small and big plates such as chorizo croquette with saffron aioli and Joo Won’s Korean chicken.

I used to go to its big brother quite a lot and loved it so I thought I'd try the Hop. The beer is good, the food is gastro pub at its finest and the service was very professional and courteous. The waitresses were knowledgeable and worked well as a team to ensure that all the guests in the small dining area were well attended.

The negatives were that the price was a little on the steep side but it is London so you can either accept it or you can't; and it was a little overcrowded in the bar area and the noise spilled in to the dining area.

The negatives were not enough to take away more than 1* from an otherwise 5* review.

After asking twice for smoked chicken on my Cesar salad it was served with none. It then took 10 minutes for this to arrive- by which time I had almost finished the small portion. Both the salad and the small plates my parter ordered were very average (I had to ask for extra Cesar dressing as I couldn’t taste it). There was no effort from the front of house staff to remove the cost of the chicken or the service charge. We won’t be returning

I had lunch with a business colleague and I had the lamb curry which was quite good and was a generous serving for lunch. Atmosphere was nice and trendy. Prices seemed a bit high for what we ate, but I through that was because of the Galvin name.

Dear Karen H, thank you for your 4-star review. I am sorry you found the prices high but, as you rightly say, Galvin only buy the finest seasonal ingredients and these do cost more. We hope this explanation helps and look forward to welcoming you again. Best regards, Clare

I have been to Galvin HOP a few times before and the food was always delicious.
We have visited with a friend on Friday and I have found that the menu has dramatically changed - the selection of dishes is more pub like now, some of the French classics are no longer offered like escargots.
The food was just average, with no sophisticated elegant taste.
The deserts were actually bad - I initially ordered the sticky toffee pudding which was just some cake boiled in a pod with caramel sauce poured over it, it tasted funny and I found some chewy bits inside. The explanation I was given was that these were banana pieces, which I seriously doubt.
I was offered a replacement and decided to swap for the vanilla cheese cake, which tasted like a cheesecake from the supermarket. It came with extremely sweet rhubarb compote/jelly powered over it - not sure how this combination was selected.
The staff lacked any knowledge about the menu or the wine list.
Overall, a disappointment visit.

Dear Valentina K, thank you for your comments and we are very sorry to hear you were disappointed. Since converting into a pub (over 2 years ago) we have not sold escargots, as this sort of food does not fit with the pub concept, so I am assuming you are referring to when the building was a French café/bistro/restaurant? I have passed on your comments to the chef about the desserts and also the managers regarding lack of staff knowledge and we will take all of this on board in an endeavour to improve. Thank you for your feedback. Kind regards, Clare

We've been here a few times for prosecco lunches and they know how to treat their customers.
The menu has choices, the food is good, service is good, it's a nice location, pleasant ambience and the prosecco flows freely.
I think the prosecco lunch is good value. I keep meaning to try La Chapelle next door (more upmarket) but why bother when you can HOP next door for perfectly good food/wine.
