Owner description: Nestled in a loop of the Thames, London Wetland Centre is an urban oasis for wildlife and people; a rural idyll in the heart of the capital. Voted the UK’s Favourite Nature Reserve by readers of Country file magazine, it is perfect for a relaxing stroll along the paths that meander among the lakes, meadows and gardens. The Centre is a haven for wild ducks, wading birds, butterflies, bats, amphibians and water voles. Visitors can also see a collection of beautiful water birds from around the world, and watch the antics of the otter family at feeding time. With six hides, two kids’ adventure zones and a café there’s something for everyone.

“My favourite local garden”
Reviewed 1 April 2012

The Wetland centre is like a different world - if you didn't have the planes coming in to land in Heathrow Airport, you would think you were in the middle of nowhere.

It is a great place to go for a walk on a Sunday afternoon but remember your camera as you never know which interesting bird you may see.

“Surreal peace”
Reviewed 22 March 2012

I am a member, and quite a regular visitor to the centre, so it is a familiar place. I arrive by bike, change my shoes, lock the bike up in one of their wonderfully secure cages, and check in. Out to the Peacock Tower for the first session, a lunch in their cafe, and then out in the opposite direction to Wildside before heading home. Pretty routine...
The thing is that this place started out as four bleak concrete squares, and is now a maze of ponds, lakes, lagoons, reedbeds, trees and artwork. It is a real oasis of rural calm but surrounded by buildings and emergency service sirens. That is its surreality. One minute you are listening to the drone of an A380 approaching LHR, the next a Cetti's warbler is shouting at you. A delight.
