Our room was small, stuffy and looked out on to a back yard. The breakfast wasn’t properly cooked or rather everything on the plate could have been hotter. This impersonal place is overpriced. The price is as steep as the hill on which it is situated!

Hi iris_mcmenzie, thank you for taking the time to share your valued feedback. I am sorry to hear you were disappointed with your stay. We always recommend guests assess directly our differing room types; being a cosy (economy double) these are the most standard of room type that we offer and are not promoted as having a view - however all guests can enjoy spectacular views of Windermere Lake and the Fells beyond from any of lounges, bar or outside terrace thanks to the hill we are situated on. Alternatively we would recommend booking a higher standard of room to guarantee a better outlook. I will certainly pass on your comments to the chef in regards to breakfast, and again i am sorry this was not to the usual Hillthwaite standard. Being an amenable hotel with a very friendly team i would have thought the staff could have provided you with a replacement breakfast, which i know is not ideal but an option which we would have happily obliged. Again i am very sorry for the issues you experienced and thank you. Kindest Regards.

We stayed here on a dinner bed and breakfast basis for five nights last week. We’ve been looking for a perfect country house hotel for a while, a place where we can go often to relax and do nothing other than sleep, walk, read and enjoy good food. Unfortunately, this didn’t tick all our boxes, although there are lots of good things about the hotel which we appreciated. The location is ideal, a short stroll from Bowness and well placed for exploring the Lakeland attractions. We stayed in Wordsworth, a superior room. Although not large, it had two comfortable armchairs in front of a picture window and a balcony looking onto the fells. It was warm and comfortable, had ample storage, a king sized bed which was very comfortable, a swish bathroom with a deep bath, gallons of piping hot water and a wall mounted television if you cared to watch TV while you were wallowing. The menu was imaginative and the food was generally good, although a couple of times our breakfast was merely warm rather than hot. The one thing which will put us off going back to this hotel is the piped music which plays in the public areas all the time. I don’t want to eat my breakfast listening to some group warble on about true love, and I can’t sit quietly in a lounge and read a book or a newspaper while the same noise is going on. I did raise it with the staff but I was told it’s hotel policy to have it playing all the time, it creates an ambience which the management believe the majority of guests appreciate. As a result, we avoided the lounges and relaxed in our room after we came back from walking and for this reason we were very glad that we had booked into a superior room. However, there was one problem with the room...squeaky floorboards in the room above. The people above us weren’t noisy or loud, but every time they moved we could hear them. We tend to retire early but my partner was woken up one night when the people above came in later, and we were both woken at 7.00 on our last morning because that was the time the people above had decided to get up. Finally, the staff aren’t unfriendly or unhelpful, but I wouldn’t say that they are particularly welcoming either. For example, on our last night we were shown to our table and the waitress in charge came to take our order. My partner ordered plaice. She told us that, unfortunately, there was no plaice that night. We said OK, give us a few moments to reconsider but she just stood there and said, “No, I have to complete the order”. (What!? Why! Who’s the customer here?!). I said that she might be standing there for some time because we were not going to be rushed and she went away. So, as a lot of the reviews show, a good hotel in many ways but not one for us.

Hi Dave W, thank-you for your valued feedback relating to your recent stay here at Hillthwaite. We take all comments on board and are always looking for ways to improve what we offer to guests, so i hope from taking action to your review if you decide to come again we can get everything perfect. We do have a Residents Lounge which features no speakers and is maintained as a quiet space for guests to read, relax or just get some tranquil serenity, but following a survey carried out this year relating to the preferred dining experience of Hillthwaite guests background music was something the majority of guests prefer. Despite this i take note of your comments and we are reviewing the hotels playlists to ensure only the most appropriate music is played. Your service comments have also been passed on to the restaurant manager and in addition to this we are looking into the squeaky floorboards, and apologise for any inconvenience these caused to your stay. We hope you will give us the opportunity to welcome you back and will ensure the other parts of your stay are improved. Than you for taking the time to share your feedback and please do not hesitate to get in touch directly to arrange a future stay.

My wife and I stayed here for our wedding anniversary and have to say we were impressed with the decor and furnishings.on arrival we ordered a sandwich and drink off the lovely waitress while we waited for our room. The egg mayonnaise sandwich I ordered was very poor it tasted sour and was inedible.the waitress exchanged it for a different one which was lovely I also ordered soup which would have been perfect if it was hot. Our room was perfect very nice and spotlessly clean with a lovely shower room, the king size bed was the most comfortable we have slept in with pillows to match. We ordered dinner at 7-45 and were served at 8-35 which seemed excessive as at this time it didn’t seem that busy the chicken off the grill we ordered was perfectly cooked and very tasty unfortunately the chips that accompanied it weren’t nice at all and tasted like they had been cooked in fat that should have been changed weeks ago very disappointed.when we checked out the lady on the desk seemed uninterested when we gave her what we thought would be constructive feedback to help iron out some failings in the kitchen department that stop this place being exceptional would we return or recommend it possibly if they fine tune the small details

Dear Shaun C, thank you for your valued feedback which i will investigate and take very seriously, ensuring improvements can be made for the future. I am very sorry that on this rare occasion you're overall positive experience was tarnished by these particular issues with the food and wait time. All comments raised by guests are respected and welcomed by all our patrons, and i am again very sorry if you felt this was not the case upon checking out. Thank you for your kind words in relation to the decor following our recent and substantial renovations, and i am glad to hear that you quickly got the issues resolved. I have passed your review on to both the head chef and restaurant manager and please be rest assured that your constructive feedback is appreciated and important to all of us. I hope you will not be put off coming to stay with once again, ensuring a faultless return visit. Kindest Regards. E. Myers. House Manager.

Hi 115Tes, thank you for taking the time to post your five star review. It is wonderful to know you chose to come in for drinks and food as many still believe we are not open to non-residents (of which we are). Glad to hear you liked the atmosphere and thought the food to be of excellent quality. We are now introducing our Autumn/Winter menu which will provide slightly larger portions, and give some lower priced options. So please do come and see us again, or perhaps book yourself in for an overnight stay. Thank you again.

Perfect location, food is beautiful and rooms are lovely. Rooms 35/36 which look out onto the lake and mountains are stunning. The most comfortable bed in the lakes and the best sleep I’ve had in months.
