The Barn is a stunning cottage with fantastic views. The barn was well equipped and we couldn't have asked for more. Ruth and Peter made us very welcome with chicken eggs, a lovely homemade loaf of bread and butter. Personal touches with towels and chocolates was lovely. A week is not long enough as so much too see and do, you couldn't be more relaxed here.

“Pleasant cottage in a very quiet village”
Reviewed 30 July 2013 for a stay in July 2013

The cottage is one of four in a small courtyard with shared parking space. The cottage is reasonably spacious with two adequate sized bedrooms and shower room downstairs and a large lounge/kitchen/dining area upstairs. The kitchen is well appointed and there is also a washing machine/tumble drier, so most eventualities catered for. There was also a reasonable supply of herbs/salt/pepper etc. to help get you started. There is a large gate at the top of the stairs so that the main living area can be made child proof for anyone with younger family members.
Overall most facilities were in good condition, but a few were starting to show signs of needing repair/maintenance, however, to be fair, ownership of the cottages changed between when we booked and when we visited. The new owners seem to be quite busy on renovations etc. so this is probably only a short term issue. We had expected Wi-fi, however, broadband was due to be connected to the property the week after we left...
The village is extremely quiet with virtually no traffic - tractors and horses almost more common than cars! A lot of the village comprises attractive sandstone properties, and the surrounding countryside is very pretty and unspoilt. There is no pub/shop in the village, so trips to Melmerby/Langwathby/Penrith were needed for groceries etc. however, with a little planning this should not be a problem. Easy links to Penrith and the Lakes or across to Alston etc. mean that the cottage is well located for a relaxing holiday.

“We loved the barn”
Reviewed 4 August 2011 for a stay in June 2011

We were looking for a place to stay near the lake district but not in the heart of all the tourist spots. Gamblesby is nearby and was perfect for us. The Barn was comfortable and really had all the comforts you need. Mark and Pat were great hosts and the folders with recommended places to visit were very well organised and a lot of help when deciding what to do and where to go to eat. We hope we can come back again some day soon.

Great place! Didn't realise it was so far out till we arrived ! Very few shops but lots of cows and green pasture.our hosts Pat and Mark were fantastic. I don't think there was anything they didn't know about the area! They were always available to answer any question. Dinner at The Shepherd's Inn is certainly a must. The coffee at this inn is sensational. We rated it as the best in England!! This place is certainly a great base for visiting The Lake District and other areas around. Fantastic walks at your back door. Certainly a highlight of our trip!
