“Be careful.”
Reviewed 28 May 2012

I've never stayed in YHA hostel before and this place had good and bad points.

First off the Hostel is a lovely old building in a cracking location; the accomadation was basic as you would expect from a hostel but it was clean. Unfortunately when we arrived at 21:30 at night after a long walk we found we had to pay more than the price we were quoted when we booked because we're not members of the Association and at that time of night we did not have any other options.

On checking out, we were told we had to pay a 2nd time for one breakfast, that we had paid for the day before and then were told in an agressive manner by the deputy manager "We'll take the hit this time!" which when the food had already been paid for is not taking a hit.

As I said this was my first experience of using the YHA and because of the condescending and confrontational way our group was spoken to I personally will not be returning to YHA and would warn others to avoid these unprofessional places.

Very clean and tidy. The staff were welcoming and helpful and had great local knowledge. We had evening meals and breakfast and both were great. Upon returning home I called to explain I had lost my camera. One of the staff immediately went to the car park to look for it for me! We all had a great time and I would highly recommend.

Our first stay in a hostel, on the C to C. We expected hostels to be a certain way and this proved us totally wrong. The room, the staff, the food, the location, EVERYTHING, was 10/10. To the "Barrister" in charge of the coffees (you know who you are!) Thank you to you & the rest of the staff for looking after us & making us feel so welcome. We're looking forward to our next hostel stay.

Room Tip: We had a room for 2, with it's own sink. Plenty of showers & loos just a few doors away.

Busy hostel within walking distance of the village. My dorm was in the annexe so it was good while a large school group was in the main house, but rather small and cramped otherwise. Glad I didn't have a large rucksack or a lot of gear! Good sized self catering kitchen in the annexe too, but alas, one of the hobs was out of action. Lovely hostel lounge, but as there are poor mobile signals throughout the Grasmere area, don't expect to use the phone, and get back with nature instead. Deer and squirrels roaming the extensive garden, which is also brilliant for young families as the kids can run around well away from traffic. The new NT attraction Allan Bank is near the hostel, ideal for literature fans - add it to your itinerary along with the Wordsworth properties at Town End.

Room Tip: Ask for the annexe if wanting a quiet night, although the main house probably has bigger rooms.

A beautiful place. It's years since I hostelled in the UK & this has made me realise I want to do more. Very friendly, clean, warm and welcoming. Fantastic food - breakfast especially. Good drying room and a great location. The staff were very helpful.

Room Tip: The bunk rooms in the annexe are small but cosy!
