We loved this cosy cottage. It has everything you need and a great location for town or walking , straight from the house . I took my children and they didn't want to leave, we can't wait to return !
A perfect base for a brief walking holiday in the Lakes. Well appointed kitchen, brand new shower room and comfortable if quaintly furnished living and bedrooms. Two of us had bags of space; i suspect it would be a tighter fit for four adults but quite manageable. Short walk down into Ambleside for shops, bars and restaurants - and the bus stop if like us you come without a car.
Loved this cottage and will return!. I love old places and this cottage is in slate used everywhere in Ambleside. It is very cosy and cute. The heating, hot water and kitchen are all very well set up. I liked the bathroom. It is spacious, with a super shower. The parking is easy and well marked.
Inside the cottage both bedrooms are great- though I think it could be a bit of a squeeze with 4 people (we were two)- manageable, though. The stairs are quite steep, but we are used to steep stairs in old houses.
The location is just fabulous- just a stroll down a small slope to the charming and interesting village of Ambleside, with its excellent shops and at least 20 shops selling outdoor equipment at varying prices, 3 supermarkets and lots of pubs. A short drive will take you to the excellent produce shop, Booths, (there are 2 other Booth shops in the Lake District), at Lakeside near Windermere.
There are 3 cinema outlets in Ambleside, showing the most recent movies.
There is no washing machine in the cottage, but a very good laundromat (GB pounds 6 for a wash and dry) is just down the slope and across the road and very close.
It is super to be able to walk, and not have to drive the car, from the cottage to some of walking tracks, like Rydal Waters (about 15 minutes from the cottage to the start) - wonderful views and walk. Nearby towns, like Grasmere are a walk on the flat for about 5 miles through delightful, picture perfect country.
If you drive there are very appealing towns nearby like Keswick, Kendal, Hawks Nest, Windermere,Grasmere.
We definitely plan to come back and stay in this cottage! My one suggestion is to include a knife sharpener amongst the kitchen equipment.
The Blue Hill Cottage was exactly how I imagined it: perfect for our one week stay. The location could not be better, a quick walk into the village center (5-10 minutes--do note that it is up-hill for the walk back). The cottage was very clean and tastefully decorated with reproductions of artwork depicting local scenes, a handy 3-d map in the salon for planning our hiking adventures.. We only used the fireplace once, as the weather was quite warm, but that was a nice feature. The remodeled bathroom/shower is bright and shiny, although the 1/2 glass door on the shower makes it difficult to retain splashes inside. There were four adults staying--we were very comfortable, but it was important to have good communication about use of the single bathroom. Ambleside is centrally located and you can start hiking right out side the door! Bus service to other nearby Lakes locations is convenient if you don't have a car. The view from the front of the cottage row is lovely, rain or shine. Loads of books about local attractions (do bring your own OS maps) and two walking sticks available. I would definitely stay here again, and would recommend Blue Hill Cottage to my fellow travelers. I hope I can return soon!
