We booked this hotel, because it is back-to-back with the Cathedral Gate, and my wife has had trouble walking. First of all, don't look for any blinking neon sign announcing it's location. Look instead for a door leading up to the second story, with a small square sign telling you this is the Cathedral Gate Hotel. You might also catch the larger sign across the front at the second floor, but if you're driving, you could miss it easily.
Once in the tiny reception area, we were greeted with pleasant charm (those British!), and shown to our room. This involved a veritable maze to get there (common among European hotels that were first built hundreds of years ago). This maze took us inside and outside, up through a roof patio area. The room was roomy for two people, with a four-poster and a cute bathroom.
We couldn't stay for breakfast either day, so no report there.
It was beautiful falling asleep while the Cathedral bells were ringing, and the sunset over the Cathedral towers outside our window was ethereal. And our evening on the patio with a glass of wine was sublime.
Charm? You'll experience it here. But if you're looking for a contemporary chrome and glass boutique, forget about it.

The hotel is certainly unusual, its literately next door to the main entry gate to the Cathedral, so its perfect location to tour the city center. We are lucky to be given a room to the rear, so there's very little street noise at night. Although be prepared to be awake on Sunday morning with the cathedral bells.
There does not seem to be any en suite toilet/ bathroom to the guest rooms. so be prepare to share the facility with other guests & bring some slippers. Also its unfortunate that there's a major restoration work & rebuilding to the back of the hotel. So although you may have a good view of the Cathedral, you also look straight out to a building site. Luckily we stayed over the bank holiday weekend, so there's no construction works going on, but during the normal weekdays, I can imagine it may get a little noisy. Also the ground floor shops are under refurbishment at present. So it does make the place look like works in progress still at present.
The hotel offer 24 hours car parking pass when you check -in. Just remember to give them you car registration number & they can log you in to allow you to park in any of the four public car park in town. You can drive up to the hotel first & drop the bags off, then you can purchase the parking permit. Just hope you can find a space as the car park do get full quickly.
Finally there's a LOT of steps to climb, and the stairs are not very wide. But that's part of the quirky charm of the place, Just hope they finish all the building works soon (not likely as the hoarding claims the restoration program goes on till 2022).

Myself and my fiance stayed here the night of our graduation at Canterbury cathedral. After booking I emailed asking if we could have a room with a cathedral view. No promises were made but on arrival we were led to a room overlooking the cathedral, which despite building work going on was a breathtaking view! Our room had a little table by the window and I spent a lot of our stay sat at the table admiring the view! When we checked in the lady on reception was very helpful and we were surprised to see that we could order breakfast to our room for the morning. We weren't aware that the breakfast was only continental so bear this in mind, but you can order a full English for around £7.00. In the morning we were woken up by cathedral bells, which were quite loud - we had to shut the window! We then had breakfast delivered to our room. The breakfast was beautifully presented and I was particularly impressed with the fruit salad (which had lots of types of fruit in it, from pineapple to melon to strawberries, grapes and other berries) and the range of spreads (honey, jam, marmalade e.t.c.). We were also brought fresh coffee and my partner had the full English, which was still hot when brought to us (so hot I had to use napkins to pick up the plate!). One thing which surprised us about the hotel (though it should not be surprising given the tudor-type building) was that the toilets and showers are communal not en-suite. From our bedroom the toilet was a little way away. After checking out we had bought a trail tour of Canterbury online which required printing, and the receptionist was quite happy to print this out for us, which I felt was exceptional service. Overall a lovely experience which we loved - thank you Cathedral Gate Hotel!

Room Tip: Definitely try to get a room with a cathedral view!

Spent 4 nights here, great stay. Historic building (as in 15th century), centrally located (literally right next to the Cathedral and within walking distance of many sights, restaurants, cafes, etc). Staff very friendly and helpful, room clean and well-kept each day. The weather was very hot the first couple of days, but despite having no A/C (and being in a 500 year old building) it was adequately ventilated and we were supplied with a fan that worked fine. Nice breakfast room and bar. No parking onsite, but they have a voucher system that allows you to park in any of the public lots for a reasonable fee. We had an en suite room which was definitely more pricey than the rooms with the shared facilities, but it was worth it (nice modern bathroom, huge clean tub and shower).Very comfortable, and you can't beat it for atmosphere, location, and historical interest.

Room Tip: If you have mobility issues, there are a lot of stairs; call first to choose a room.
