“Wonderful stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 March 2012

My partner and I stayed in the Marrakesh Suite last week. It was quiet, beautifully furnished and had its own terrace and entrance. The shower was powerful (the sign of a good room to me!) and there were lovely toiletries and touches throughout the room. We are a young couple (early 20s) and sometimes you are treated with suspicion but we were made to feel very much at home. The staff were kind and courteous without being intrusive. The honesty bar was a nice touch but the only spirit on offer was whisky, so we didn't use it. We did make full use of the lounge area with its games and free dvd collection. The arrangement is built on trust and this makes a nice change the traditions of TVs bolted to walls! The cathedral is a five minute walk, as are many restaurants. A lovely stay. And free parking!

Room Tip: Marrakesh was lovely but a bit big for two - will try something else next time!

We felt at home from the moment we arrived to the moment we left, the staff could not have been more helpful with not only the hotels facilities but also the tourist info they gave us. We stayed in Stable 2 in the converted stable block which, although small was adequate and very well appointed and had every comfort. We slept very well indeed in our super king size bed, my husband spent some time wondering if we could fit it into our bedroom at home!! The Kentish breakfast was scrummy and set us up nicely for the day. The trains behind did not cause any problems, just a rumble which stopped at night. The location was super, very close to the city centre, about 10 mins walk from the Cathedral. The only reason I dropped a star for location was because the only way it could have been improved was if the trains were not there even though they did not cause a problem. I think that if you stayed right in the city centre you would have been disturbed by the number of revellers in the streets. So three cheers for the House of Agnes!!

Room Tip: Stable 2 was a modern, clean and well appointed room. The bathroom was warm, underfloor heating as w...

My husband and i decided on a day trip to Canterbury and loved it so much we decided to stay the night. After visiting a few b&b's we were fortunate enough to stumble upon House of Agnes. Greeted by a warm and friendly Natasha who was keen to show us various rooms that were available we opted for the Canterbury Room with beamed ceilings, antique furniture, four poster bed, flat screen tv, tea and coffee making facilities and a huge bay window, heaven!

On comparison to other b&b's we saw this clearly was the best choice. Located close to the city centre and Canterbury West train station just a few minutes walk away we were delighted to have found this place which for me was more like a small boutique hotel, very cosy and well thought out and decorated to a high standard. The garden at the back of the hotel is a big plus, really well maintained.

While we were pleased our with our accommodation, my only niggle would be that although the breakfast was tasty and nice it was on the small side and our waitress seemed a bit put out when my hubby asked for another egg and some beans.

All in all we were happy with our stay and by the way all rooms we were shown were lovely but picked this particular room for its character. Many thanks to Natasha on reception for being so welcoming!

Room Tip: Loved the Canterbury Room but it is at the front of the building so be prepared for a little street...

This interesting listed/listing B&B has a wealth of history that oozes from the bowed walls of wattle and daub . Quirky as well with themed rooms , a decent TV ( which actually works ) and an 'honesty bar' - no doubt to skirt licencing regulations and the need to pay someone to operate it ?! Breakfast was very nice . Great position for visiting Canterbury . For me the room was too hot on arrival , the bathroom smelt of chemicals which were no doubt for the electric loo . In this respect , should there be an extractor fan somewhere in an enclosed loo/bathroom ?
Generally almost worth a visit in its own right ....

Room Tip: Tokyo suite fronts on to main road which was noisy as we had to have the window open to cool the roo...

A 600 year old building creates many challenges, amongst them is the difficulty of making sure rooms are at a comfortable temperature. To this end we have recently made a huge investment to restore our Tudor windows (for insulation), install air conditioning (to keep cool) and replace the old radiators to keep everyone warm/cold/average as required..
We also have the problem of 'plumbing across the ages' consequently a few of our bathrooms have the latest in electric loo's but dont worry there's no risk of electrocution..we are safety compliant!
Importantly, to clarify a point with respect to our honesty bar as mentioned by this reviewer, the House of Agnes has a full liquor licence which is required by law in order to provide alcohol on its premises. However, rather than providing a bar person, it seems far more enjoyable when my guests can feel at home by helping themselves at any time of the day or night thus allowing the gents to sneak down in the evening without the missus knowing! (or vice versa!)
