Description: A 17th century inn on the steps down from Rye's castle, after which it was named. The biggest beer garden in Rye. Great food. The best beer selection in town.

The food is so much better than many standard pubs. The menu isn’t vast, but everything we ordered was just superb. Very kid friendly, lovely dog wandering round the pub and friendly staff. Would definitely recommend and return when next in Rye.

We all were staying at the Mermaid Inn and were told about this lovely pub, so had to go along and we are so glad we did, on entering we got a warm hello from both chaps running the pub, got our table and picked our food, our sandwiches were wonderful huge chunky bread, with Ham & Mustard and cheese and homemade pickle, with a other starter of like a Rice ball stuffed and they were delicious, it's a beautiful spotless pub and has an amazing beer garden in front with its own separate bar so no need to run back and forth to get drinks, the views over the sand banks is just as beautiful, and it's all under the Rye Castle with is so beautiful to look at, the service was so warm and Genuine and we had a wonderful lunch, so this is a must Folks whilst in Rye.

We ate here on our first night in Rye and had a fantastic meal. The service was super friendly and the food was simply delicious. To top it all the pub has real character and old world charm. Will definitely be returning soon.

We were staying in the area and booked a table here for Easter Sunday based on the great reviews.

We arrived to a warm welcome from who I assume is the owner, and he talked through the different beers available.

My husband and I both had roast lamb, which was truly delicious, and our two children had half portions of ham, eggs and chips. We then shared the cheese board, which was also very nice.

The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is that it was on the pricey side, for a special treat we didn't mind though. Also, maybe I'm just greedy but I would have liked a slightly bigger portion.

We finished the afternoon with a walk around the castle, which the kids enjoyed.

I would definitely recommend and look forward to returning.

We stayed in Rye over Valentines and booked a table at this pub. It was a very stormy evening with heavy rain and therefore the pub wasn't that busy however, as a couple we do prefer a quieter venue so this was heaven for us. The three course meal we had was beautifully cooked, well presented on the place and the service was very good. I thoroughly enjoyed my sea bass and recommend you try it too! The bar staff couldn't do anymore for us and we had a lovely evening. We spent a little while sitting around the open fire before heading back out in the rain. This is a great pub with superb food and well worth trying! We will definitely be returning.
