We visited Hastings for the day on our return home after the weekend camping and as the boys love their trains we thought we’d try the East Hill Cliff lift. It’s set in the Old Town near the moored boats and fresh fish huts and stalls and gives you a loft to the coastal walks above Hastings. Here are two lifts that take passengers up and down the cliff and you only have to wait for a few minutes before you are on your way up or back down again. Due to the weather we didn’t wander too far once we got off at the top fo the cliff, but the views across Hastings are stunning. The staff clean the glass of the lifts so visitors can take photos as the lift goes up and down the cliff. When you get off there are marked walks along the cliff top to enjoy. When we visited the coastal walk was closed due to a landslide. There is plenty of information about the history of the lift and staff are super friendly and helpful and ready to answer any questions you have. It’s only a short ride but worth the fee to get wonderful views of the coast and Hastings itself. If you prefer you can climb the 150 stairs either up or come back down. But the ride either way was great and the boys were excited to do a return journey.

We had some 'friends' staying over from France, so wanted to make their stay as uncomfortable as possible. The idea was to get them to stand as close to the edge of the cliff as possible, but we were all pretty drunk and really couldn't be bothered to climb up the million steps to get there, hence the lift-up.
We almost went up the west hill lift but then i remembered i had several traumatic experiences in tunnels, and as we had the french with us, didn't want to chance it, so we travelled on to the east hill lift which is not even 1 stop on the bus.
I don't like to touch things that other people have touched, especially dirty handles and icky buttons dripping with other peoples finger mank, and so thank heavens the lift had an automatic door and no smelly filthy minging buttons to push. I also don't like to be touched by people with beards, i once had a traumatic experience with a bearded person, in a tunnel, and was relieved that no one on board the lift had a beard.
The ticket also brings you back down but we thought that we wouldn't need it as we hoped to get a piggy back down from the french. The lift started off slowly and I think it was broken because it didn't really pick up speed at all. I thought it was strange that we weren't strapped in.
We had to use gaffer tape to secure the french, which they didn't like at all, and totally overreacted IMO, and shouting something in french. But fortunately a sock did the job. But it was all wasted as the speed was much much slower than the ride i once had in littlehampton, but i wouldn't go back there as i still have nightmares about the last visit, very traumatic.
Anyway we eventually arrived at the top, i think we might have dozed off for a while, but we were safe thank goodness, and enormously relieved that we didn't go in a tunnel or touch any beardy people.

Staff very welcoming and friendly. About 60 seconds of pure terror if you are scared of heights like i am but well worth it. Clean, well kept and very reasonably priced.
