We have visited Hastings Castle many years ago in fact I have a Photo of my Wife (in a Bikini) hanging on to the flag pole taken in 1969 . So on our recent trip to the UK we had to visit again. This is an English Heritage Site so we used our OS Visitor passes again . English Heritage do a wonderful job in maintaining around 400 sites around England in very difficult circumstances considering the age of the sites , this one being well over 900 years old and considering that around 2 thirds of it has fallen into the sea over the years , what is left is still well worth a visit . This castle was originally built by William of Normandy (The Conqueror) and was started in 1066 and rebuilt in stone in 1070 .
And although a ruin is definitely worth a visit .
I took another Photo of my Wife on the Flagpole .

not much of the castle left but still a great piece of British history. a superb view of the coast line, can be windy but get a good day and the views are stunning. a ride in the lift is as good

Fabulous place to visit, especially if you like climbing steps and clamouring over rocks. And that's before you get in to the castle. But I believe there are easier ways to get to it, such as by car, but why would you if you don't need to. The castle itself is fabulous. On a hill, edge of a cliff, great place to ward off an invasion from the sea. A very interesting film about the history of the castle and William the Conqueror is also shown. Ask at the ticket booth. After visiting the castle, walk down to the old part of Hastings or down to the sea front. A terrific way to spend a couple of hours.

You can use west cliff railway to get to the top where the castle is located. There isnt much left of the original castle but in the price of the entry you get addmision to little show room where you can watch a quick film telling the story of the castle and Hastings itself! Views from up there are wonderfull!!!
