We were two together. I got the four cheese pizza and my friend got one with salami and mushroom. Both pizzas were delicious, thin crusted and really good. Great service.

It is several years since I have had lunch here. So, firstly, the good points - the location is superb and the staff are friendly and attentive. The decor is boring and unimaginative and there is a total lack of atmosphere. However most importantly the food was really disappointing. It is canteen quality eating - it is fodder - and that is poor, considering where this. On the strength of its long standing reputation we had made a reservation but had we not done so, we would most likely have eaten elsewhere. On the way to this restaurant we noticed two new eating places in North Street and both had, in the window, huge bowls full of the most gorgeous, colourful and exciting looking salads. Donatello's salad bar demonstrated absolutely no effort whatsoever - it was boring and tired and old-hat. There were bowls of chopped cos lettuce, quartered tomatoes, sliced cucumber, cooked beetroot, coleslaw, tinned chickpeas - there was absolutely nothing which indicated any imagination or flair for cooking. The salad bar at the University of Brighton is 10 times better! The pizzas were very basic and the pizza marinara was littered with bits of calamari, 6 overcooked and slightly burnt mussels, but little else. The cappuccino could have been downed in one mouthful because it was lukewarm. It felt to me like this place wanted a really good shake up. It needs to come into the 21st century and open a few cookbooks and bring out something really worth eating.

Me and my husband came here for our anniversary, stunning place and very polite staff!

We were seated in seconds and orders our drinks, and they gave us a chance to read what was on the menu. I had a pizza and my husband had a lasagne. We also ordered garlic bread. And the good thing about the food was that it was piping hot!

However the downside of it was that it garlic bread was pretty much burnt and it didn't have as much flavour as I though it would of had... Although it was very nice, and the portions and big as well! Slightly on the expensive side though (the drinks were the most expensive) over all a really nice place and I'd love to return!!

Glad to hear you enjoyed yourselves, ScarlettRuby-Rose - and happy anniversary!
Food at Donatello is cooked to order, so it should always be hot - unless it's supposed to be cold of course!
Sorry you didn't care for the garlic bread. Remember, our team will always exchange any dish/meal that you are unsatisfied with.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. We hope to see you again soon.

The food was mediocre - it tasted like it was from a jar or packet and the staff were unwelcoming. We have no problem leaving a tip but found the 10% service charge a bit of a cheek after such poor food and service.

The staff were very pleasant and friendly and the setting and seating area is very nice situated in the lanes it has a very relaxed atmosphere. The food was okay not the greatest Italian we've been too even though it all looked very nice the starters were not very pleasing but pasta for mains was rather nice and was the best part of the meal. Would I recommend this retaurant? Yes for value because 2 courses were under £9 but I wouldn't expect a higher price for this standard of food
