Owner description: Having opened its doors way back in 1882, the Fortune of War is far and away the oldest seafront watering hole, and hence the only pub amongst numerous clubs and bars. It is also the only venue in the whole of Brighton to be shaped like an upside down boat. The main attraction, however, has to be the extremely large beer garden, otherwise known as Brighton beach.
Useful Information: Bathroom facilities, Food available for purchase

Have been visiting this pub for years. Usually after a bike ride from london. Have always enjoyed it as a quiet place to have a (well deserved) pint & mediocre fish & chips from next door.

Recently the number of real ales has been declining, being replaced with craft beers & ciders. Today there was only 1 real ale, a well presented pale ale. (I have no problem with craft beers, but the minimum was ~6%, which is too much for a sunny mid-afternoon pint!)

However the problem was with the new neighbors, or rather the reaction to them. The new bar which has opened alongside plays LOUD MUSIC! Rather than let it be, or negotiate them turning it down. The fortune has seemingly tried to retaliate by drowning then out. The result was an awful cacophony of both sound systems, which drove me & my aching body onto the uncomfortable beach.

The staff were as friendly & helpful as ever, the beer was great but the ambience has been destroyed! Hence the low overall rating which otherwise would have been four or five stars.

Wandering along the seafront on a sunny February afternoon looking for refreshment we spotted the Fortune of War. An amazing boat theme interior with a cosy feel. We were lucky enough to get the table right in the window looking out at the beach and the world going by - just perfect! Will definitely be visiting again on our next visit to Brighton.

Whether it's during the day sat outside in the sun or inthe cosy inside, this is a great lively bar. It's right on the beach and you can just drink, chat and enjoy the view

We went for a drink after a trip to the beach. Brought our bottled cider with us but were fully intending to buy drinks afterwards. Bear in mind it was not busy and there were several tables free. The waiter very rudely told us to leave. Completely unnecessary and they've lost a two customers for life.

After a day of overcast cloud and wind at 5pm the sun came out, we got told to only really come here if the sun came out other wise the pubs in the centre would be better. Wish we could have stayed longer really but had to get the train home, surrounded by quite a few other decent places for drinking next to the beach by the looks of it too.
