You know when you suddenly have that flash back of times long gone past. The trigger could be sound that is recalled from long ago, a scent or aroma, perhaps a familiar sight, where you can't quite recall why it reminds you of something but still gives you a sense of nostalgia.
That is basically what the Chestnuts Tea Rooms are all about. A hint of this, a touch of that and an experience that takes one back to another time. I prefer not to live in the past and the couple who run this place were youngr than me, or looked that way! Tea for three, two bacon rolls and a scone with jam and clotted cream is hardly something that can be done wrong yet there are many variations of doing it right and they scored very highly. It's about freshness, delivery, taste and ambiance.
Tourists to Alfriston must, of course go here - we did - but locals do as well and it's all very relaxed and people are comfortable. I don't want to bang on too much or I may lose readers who think I am a tad over enthusiastic but suffice it to say, my bacon roll was perfect. Proper bacon, real flavour, a nice, fresh, soft roll, buttered - along with a lovely pot of tea. It took me back to when I was a kid, Sunday mornings having worked with m'dad in the allotment; back up the garden for lunch (when lunch was lunch, dinner was dinner and teatime was teatime). Go there, relax and travel back through time...I'd better stop...

Family run tea room which is clearly loved by the locals which is always a good sign. Home made cakes and sandwiches- teapots with tea-cosies. Very friendly service and food was good - jacket potato, sandwiches. Would re-visit.

Good cream tea, with some good home-made plum and blackberry jams (alongside some cheap stuff in individual jars) and service with a smile. Cosy dining area, and comfortable enough, though the thick, transparent plastic table cloth was more than a little naff.

Stayed here recently while attending a wedding at a nearby vineyard. A very warm welcome from Mary & Malcolm and a really good breakfast. Tea shop cakes and scones looked delicious too!
