Nice old fashioned traditional pub. Warm welcome, dog friendly. Family run pub. Home made food, good potion sizes. Board games to occupy you while waiting for food.

Looking around in Shaftesbury for an evening meal, we came across this pub near the bottom of the famous Gold Hill (think Hovis advert) and we3re made very welcome. The food was excellent, the service efficient and friendly, and (unlike some places) we certainly didn't come away hungry! A real find, and we'll certainly eat there again next time we're down that way.

My husband and I popped in for a meal as we were glamping near by.
When we walked in and saw how busy it was, I said wow it must be good here but then we realised the pub quiz was about to start. We were sat down and given menus. We ordered our drinks and a starter to share of garlic bread. It was in a bowl and cut into strips which ive never seen before. It didn't taste of much garlic really. Could of done with more. For mains we ordered two specials of the lamb with mint and rosemary jus with creamy mash and veg. It turned out the mint was actually in the mash but it tasted nice so it was fine. It looked really good and the mash was lovely but the lamb was a bit hard like it was cooked 2 days before and then warmed up before we had it. My husband ate his but I couldn't eat much of mine. Apart from the lamb it was lovely. The pub looked cosy and had candles everywhere. It would of been nice if they had the music on sooner when the quiz started but it was 30 minutes after the quiz started when a lady came in with a small radio to play for the customers eating. The staff were nice and polite and one of the chefs popped his out into the dining area, he checked the radio then turned his head to see if everything was ok with our meal. We said yes and didn't want to say anything about the lamb as didn't want to cause any issues.

Just returned from a weekend in Shaftesbury and came across this wonderful pub and restaurant while walking back from the bottom of Gold Hill to our accommodation. On the Friday evening were made very welcome by Andy the Landlord and some of the regulars. Also the lovely Labrador. Had a refreshing cider sat in the beer garden with spectacular views. Decided to come back on the Saturday evening for a meal. Once again had some lovely cider sitting in the beer garden while reading the menu. Decided to eat inside the pub which is full of character and once again chatted to the locals. The bar staff and waiting staff were very attentive. Even met the chef. Thank you all. I chose the Pork special with brie and apple mash. Amazing. My husband went for the ham egg and chips. Once again very good. A definite place to visit if in Shaftesbury.
