“Disapointing”

After finding the cottage available at short notice and reading the reviews we thought it would be perfect for myself, my husband, his parents and our two small children. While the cottage was adequate we found ourselves very disappointed and felt mislead by the description of the property. Firstly when you arrive here is no mention of ‘Shell Cottage’ simply number 15 on the door. It is at the back of an old manor house, there are obviously 11 apartments plus four pokey little ‘cottages’
I personally wouldn’t say the other reviews are particularly helpful with regards to the image of the property they portray, we did slightly scoff at a comment regarding creaky floorboards saying if that’s the worst thing there we won’t have a problem. The floorboards however are ridiculous, one person cannot go to the loo in the night without waking everybody else up and if someone was moving around upstairs it sounded like they were going to come through the ceiling.
The booking process was painful, the owner kept changing her mind about the days the cottage was actually available and the whole thing spoiled the holiday from the beginning.
Parking is difficult, there is one small space that is difficult to manoeuvre, I’m not the most confident driver and I struggled with this. There are two visitors spaces for the fifteen properties and these can only be used for 24 hours during the weeklong stay, although we only found this out after we arrived. Off road parking is available but when you come back at 7pm after a day out the nearest space is likely to be a five minute walk away.
On arrival we had a good look round and took photographs of everything that could possibly be blamed on us with regards to returning the deposit. And there was a lot, with regards to the cleaning there was no attention to detail, the crockery and glasses were filthy in the cupboards and I presume these had not been checked, around the plugholes and taps were caked in lime scale (just a 2 minute job to rectify) the washing machine was growing its own form of penicillin and there were cobwebs in the corners of every room. The cheap laminate floor was coming up in the kitchen, the windows hadn’t been cleaned in months, and the skirting boards hadn’t been wiped down in a very long time either. The pictures (Homeaway website) are deceptive – for starters there is no fireplace, there is no coffee table and the comfy looking leather sofas were in fact some 70’s throwback furniture you often see people taking to the tip. The dining table was a disgrace of scratches and marks, covered by a vile filthy plastic table cloth that didn’t fit the table and topped off with a vase of fake and very dusty flowers. There were marks on the carpets, scuffed paintwork and marks on the walls, there is damp around the windows in the master bedroom, and generally an unloved feel throughout the property. We had conversations with the families staying in the other three ‘cottages’ and they all felt they were misled with regards the quality of the accommodation. During the night there was a lot of noise coming from the block of flats that this ‘cottage is situated next to the car park of.
The outside area has a tiny patio with seating for two, which is incredibly helpful for a cottage that sleeps 7, in addition there were three wooden picnic benches that are shared with 15 apartments. The Garden is not secure for children, a pathway with no gate leads to a reasonably busy road and a second pathway with no gate leads to the car park then out onto the same road.
The five minute walk to the sea front is accurate but that is to the top of a very steep cliff above the beach, it then takes another 5 minutes to get down to the beach and you find yourself slap bang between Bournemouth and Boscome at least 15 minutes from any facilities. The 7 minute walk into town will get you as far and the university and the budget shops, takeaways and cheap bars. The walk into the main areas of Bournemouth is easily 30 minutes.
We were thoroughly disappointed.

“great location”
Reviewed 21 October 2013 for a stay in September 2013

The cottage was nice and clean, and the location was great - situated between the beach and a large Asda.
As it is set in the grounds of an old mansion it was quiet and secluded.
Couple of niggles; not enough crockery and cutlery to warrant using the large dishwasher - it would need to be used after every meal. There were a lot of dud light bulbs, including the outdoor ones, and the only cleaning product supplied was washing up liquid.
I would stay here again though.

“Modern cottage lovely setting”
Reviewed 16 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

I stayed here with 2 kids and my parents, aswell as my elderly grandmother. There was plenty of space for my 2 year old
To run around.
We had a week in June and found the cottage to be lovely and clean and well equipped.
It was however very dark and we had the lights on all times of day as it never got sunshine.
My grandmother complained of the creaky upstairs floorboards constantly too!
Good walking distance to both boscombe and Bournemouth and the lovely beach.

“Excellent Holiday Cottage”
Reviewed 13 August 2012 for a stay in August 2012

We stayed here with adult son & daughter together with 5 year old granddaughter. A splendid property, comfortably furnished in a modern style with everything required for a happy holiday. Daizi the 5 year old loved it and the garden, so that made us happy! Peaceful surroundings yet relatively close to the sea in a very pleasant area, easily accessible from the main roads. A thoroughly enjoyable stay. Thank you. :-)

(NB We have only just returned so cannot yet comment on the timeliness of the return of the security deposit.)
