Owner description: A centrepiece on Plymouth's Hoe, Smeaton's Tower is one of the city's most recognisable and well-loved landmarks. The lighthouse was originally built out on the notorious Eddystone Reef in 1759. It was taken down in the early 1880s and approximately two thirds of its structure moved stone by stone to its current resting place. Now standing at 72 feet high, it offers brilliant views of Plymouth Sound and beyond. Visitors can climb to the top courtesy of a series of stairs and some of the original 18th century ladders.

The weather was fair. The views were lovely. The walk itself was ok but not the most memorable visit. Although we had a good few hours wouldn't feel the urge to visit Plymouth again, too busy with traffic but Smeatons Tower was ok.

After an short but informative talk, you can climb up the windy stairs to the oil room, before taking a series of ladders through the living, eating and sleeping quarters before reaching the lanten room at the top. From there you can go outside and enjoy the splendid views out over the Hoe and beyond. Not for those who hate heights or have difficulting negotiating steps!

Reasonably priced and a lovely old tower with a few are facts and very knowledgeable people. Those around during our visit couldn't have provided more info but were not pushy at all. You have to use ladders so be prepared but take the advice given to use them & you should be fine.
