Went for lunch on 04.04. Always keen to support independent restaurants.
Place was about half full.
We were 2 adults and 2 children, ordered drinks which took 20 minutes to appear. Had to ask twice for tap water. Food took 40 minutes from ordering. We were on the verge of leaving when it arrived.
Children had the buttermilk chicken with chips, the chis were overly salty and the chicken was pieces coated in breadcrumbs deep fried and served in brioche type bun. There was a children's menu, but we weren't offered it.
I had 1/2 can chicken - one piece was undercooked and still red in middle. Didn't want to send it back as couldn't face another 40 minute wait. The other piece was tasty, but the sauce way to sweet for me, but the meat had a nice smokiness.
My partner order the soup of the day - utterly inedible carrot and coriander with way too much cumin and the salt level were so high she ate 2 mouthfuls before leaving it. No member of staff even checked if we were happy with the food.
Its in a really lovely building but the cooking was amateurish and the service so slow, we wouldn't return (we don't live in Penzance). Got the impression that the staff were busy with other tasks in the hotel maybe and therefore the service suffered.
Menu needs more healthy options other than the burger and chips + one salad offering. Perhaps a couple more specials, and given its location more emphasis on seafood. And they need a dedicated waiting staff.
They are opening a restaurant in Bristol and will really have to up the cooking and service standards to make a success of it.
