Excellent food, real ales served with a smile! One of the few 'original' pubs left in Chester. A must visit.

"A hidden gem" is a description I sometimes think twice about in reviews but this is so authentic that this description is fully deserved. This pub lies in easy reach of Chester centre, and lies alongside the famous Chester Walls. Even so, if you do not know it is there, you may easily miss it. I recommend that you take the trouble to find it. So many "pubs" these days look exactly like every other of their counterparts, usually within a commercial chain. How different and welcoming you will find this! Great English cask real ale, superb food choices, and a willingness from those serving you to actually talk and converse,....not rehearsed pleasanteries from scripted instructions as I find happens all too often these days.
We enjoyed our visit here on a Sunday Lunchtime with friends who had dined here previously. We loved the décor with all the historical memorabilia from years gone by. The service was friendly and the food was excellent.
A very atmospheric, Edwardian themed little 'local', situated on the corner of Albion Street right next to the city walls.
You immediately get a strong "back to the past" experience the moment you step inside..as it's early 20th century decor, well considered exhibits and bric a brac gives a very powerful reminder of the 1914-1918 period...with a Lee Enfield rifle, barbed wire support, old photographs and advertising signs for Colemans Mustard, Fry's chocolate, Nosegay, Players cigarettes liberally displayed throughout the place, did give an almost museum like quality...which we found slightly sobering (no pun intended), and extremely thought provoking.
Besides having lots of interesting items to look at, and atmosphere a' plenty to soak up...the staff and customers were friendly, beers very good..and although we didn't eat..the WW1 themed menu looked appetising.
In honesty this is probably not the place for a rip roaring night out, but definitely worth a visit purely to experience the feeling of being back in time.
A must see part of Chester, a welcoming pub with food to die for. The menu goes with the theme of the pub which commemorates the people of Chester who fought in the Great War. The recipes are from days gone by and the staff are worth talking to, so as to give you an insight to the area. Right next to the walls so after a good drink and food you can walk it off. Be mindful the pub shuts from 3-5 to replenish meals for the evening, all meals are cooked from fresh.
