Like a woman this cathedral turned out to be lovely to regard, but very costly to enjoy. However we were wisely advised by a local to tell the receptionist (!) that we were going to say a prayer, they let us in for nothing. It does seem quitewrong to charge to enter what is in essence a large parish church. Anyway it was lovely and well worth the visit

Chester Cathedral was beautiful, with lovely stained glass windows, a wonderful ceiling and beautiful carved wood, but on the day we went there were few people visiting. I do wonder if the entrance fee (which I thought was quite high - Durham Cathedral is equally as lovely and is free) may put people off. The gift shop had closed down but the cafe was open. I couldn't help but compare it to St Peters Church where such excellent use was made of the space, and where there was no entrance fee but we spent money and made a donation. The Cathedral may be packed in the summer, but in the winter it was as quiet as a church mouse! It is worth a visit - but so are all the other churches in Chester! There is another with wonderful wall paintings and a walk-through organ which was fantastic.

Not keen on the £6 per adult entrance fee but noticed a free performance of Faure's Requiem that evening. Beautiful singing and we donated the equivalent of the entrance fee; so everyone happy.

I visit this cathedral roughly 5 times a year (if not more) and am continuously dazzled by its beauty. We are lucky to have such a building in the city...I have even been priviliged enough to sing here!

Do not like being charged a set price to visit a place of worship. Always willing to give a donation.
