Be prepared to spend your time either hiking, or reading, because there are no activities at night on Two Harbors. The Banning House rooms do not provide televisions, radios, clocks, or hair dryers. Actually, it isn't a house, so to speak. The rooms are very nice and clean, but they are lined in a corridor type setting, similar to a motel, only the views are beautiful outside your door and windows. The staff are very nice and helpful. This is the only place to stay on Two Harbors unless you stay in tents or cabins, that are only for sleeping, in bunkbeds. Showers and bathrooms are not located in the cabins.

The only eatery on Two Harbors is a cafe that's open until 2:00 pm, and the fairly pricey restaurant that's open from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. The general store provides frozen and cold food and drinks and many items that one might need, as well as other nice things for souvenirs.

It's are strenuous walk back up to the Banning House from the downtown area, although it's a fairly short distance. The staff will pick you up at a designated location if you don't want to walk back up.

Room Tip: There are rooms for couples, or families.

We have been to the Banning House many times in the past 10 years, and it never fails to disappoint. The quaint house is over 100 years old, and located just up the hill from the small town of Two Harbors. The views from the house are fantastic, and there are many places to sit and enjoy them, including patios and a lodge room with comfortable seating and a huge fireplace. However, as reflected in the negative reviews, the Banning House, and Two Harbors may not be for everyone. The town is tiny and all the roads are dirt, so bring your hiking boots and expect to get dusty. The Banning House is a bed and breakfast, and not a full service hotel, especially in the winter months, when the island owners have cut the staff to almost nothing. The innkeeper, Kate, is extremely friendly and competent, but she is only one person. Do not go expecting it to be like Avalon. Two Harbors caters to boaters, hikers, and campers who relish the peace and quiet of a rural setting. It is a great place to bring kids for hiking, rock collecting, diving, kayaking, and looking at animals (eagles, buffalo, sea lions, foxes, ravens, and tide pools). We come home completely relaxed and decompressed from our visits there, and will continue to visit for years to come.

I loved the location of the Banning House Lodge. The view was unreal. However, when I got to our room I noticed that: 1. There were no shades on some of the windows 2. There were cobwebs in the windows and the floor wasn't very clean 3. When I moved a night stand closer to my bed, there was filth and an unopen condom under the night stand. I was with the Exodus Fitness retreat and we had the entire complex to ourselves. Other women said the same thing, their rooms were not very clean. This was unacceptable. Banning House should have given the staff a talking to and we should have gotten at the minimum a 10% discount. I would have loved for my husband and I to have gone there for a romantic retreat, but forget it. I hope they clean up their act.

This is the nice, quiet side of the island. One lodge, one campground, one restaurant, one store.. you get the idea. Banning house sits high on hill with beautiful views of both harbors. It's the location you are paying for..not a fancy hotel. Staff was polite and very helpful without being intrusive. Breakfast was nice, fresh fruits and assortment of toast, bagels, cereal, etc.. No phones, no TV, no internet.... so you can really relax and slow down. Plenty of trails to hike and/or bike (biking is strenuous) so make sure you have a good mountain bike with plenty of gears. Water is fantastic with amazing kelp forest to snorkel or dive through. We saw plenty of sea life in the water. We also saw the two local Bison who graze on the nearby hills and a few island foxes. It was a great trip.

We stayed here last year and truthfully thought we were totally ripped off--way overpriced for the service we got. The owners were surly and I think they are really taking advantage of being the only show in town. Two Harbors is a really cute place and has lovely views all directions, and there's plenty to do--but I would recommend camping or staying at some of the cabins instead of staying here.
