“Beautiful, peaceful and well hosted”
Reviewed 15 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

Tranquil surroundings, excellent accommodation and great hosting from Manolis and Rumy made for a fantastic holiday. The ability to rent one or two parts of the villa meant that we could holiday with friends but also have our own space.
We all got excited when the bread man beeped his horn in the morning so we could buy fresh bread.
Villa Amari is searchable in Google maps so use that and avoid Satnav as it gets confused.

“An incrediblly beautiful villa in a beautiful spot.”
Reviewed 17 May 2016 for a stay in May 2016

We stayed in the Villa Ida with its own swimming pool. The house itself is amazingly lovely in a typical Greek design. There are extensive outside seating areas where you can see the beautiful valley and mountains. Everything is impeccably clean and the service was excellent. Manolis is charming and helpful as is Mrs. Romey the housekeeper and cook. It is a short ride from Rethymo, but we found Rethymo to be crowded and disappointing. There is an outside barbecue with charcoal provided and local farmers come down the street selling fresh eggs, milk and bread or fresh fruits and vegetables. I picked out a bag of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and apples, which came to 2 Euros. There is a hot sun, clean air, and fairly constant breezes. Stay her to totally relax.

I'm currently sitting here in rainy London reminiscing about the great times my friends and I had at Amari Villas and Crete.

Let's start at the beginning, Manolis was always great at communication answering all of our questions and also providing an amazing comprehensive "booklet" that had very detailed instructions on how to get to the Villa from both Chania and Heraklion. In this booklet were some recommendations for restaurants and things to do. None of this stuff was the run of mill cop and paste info from the internet, you could tell he spent time creating this bespoke booklet and it was very useful.

Now onto the Villa. Directions got us straight there, in the booklet there were even pictures of landmarks we should watch out for. The Villa is easily a 90 - 120 minute drive from Chania and 90 minutes from Heraklion. Do not be alarmed, there are some winding roads you will have to take that might seem treacherous at first but only added to the appeal of its location once you got used to them.

We hired both of the Villas in a group of 11, a total of 7 bedrooms, although one was a cheekily small loft conversion. Because there were 2 villas there was 2 of everything, 2 washing machines, 2 kitchens, 2 living rooms. Loads and loads of space for 11 of us. Everything had aircon (which was needed!) and

Moving onto the outdoor spaces there 2 major spaces. one was a veranda with a large table that housed a few evening dinners. The other, of course, was the pool/bbq area. The pool is not big, but it is a good size for 5 or 6 people to frolick around in, there was even an outdoor shower. The pool area is also a great sun trap with 4 loungers ready for those who want to brown. The bbq area was built into the wall and had loads of different tools and everything you would need to create a grilled feast, all charcoal was provided!

Now let's talk about the views, the main advantage for having this mountainous retreat was the fact that the pool area overlooked the town of Amari and had was an amazing vantage point. Load up on memory cards, because you will be taking lots of pictures with this backdrop.

Another non-villa related positive is the friendliness of everyone. I believe Manolis forewarns the village whenever he has people staying at the Villa, maybe we provide another source of income, but regardless the welcomes were all genuine. Every Monday and Thursday some guy in a van full of fruit sells his wares, fresh from the farm. Try the Grapes and Cherries, you will not be disappointed, by flavour or price!

And then there was Mrs Roumy, who was a great caretaker and made our stay feel more like a hotel than a Villa, she deserves a paragraph for herself. Cleaning the pool and bbq every morning before we woke up, changing our linen, waking us up when the grocery van turned up (and even calling him to come back when we missed an early morning visit), sourcing us some local moonshine (Raki) and cooking us food, she will say she doesn't speak or understand much English but she did understand all of our requests perfectly and by the end of the trip everyone considered her a second mum.

My only regret is that we didn't take advantage of Mrs Roumy's cooking more often!

Cons - a little bit hard to get to and driving the mountainous roads at night can seem daunting
Pros - Everything else, you will not be disappointed.

“Perfect villa, delightful location, spectacular views.”
Reviewed 26 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

The house has been furnished to a very high standard. The terrace, with secluded swimming pool, barbecue area, and seating for meals is wonderful. Mrs Roumy made our food every evening, and we loved eating her excellent food whilst overlooking the pool, and with views straight across to Mt Ida, the highest mountain in Crete. Manolis is very friendly, and a really excellent host. Thoroughly recommended.

“Lovely place”

We stayed some nights in this wonderful house. We loved that the house was placed in the village and the view from the terrace was magnificent, with a view of the valley and Psiloritis. The owner of the house had really taken great care to make the house both functional and esthetic, both modern and traditional. The caretaker was the best, generous and warm.
Amari valley is really green and flowering in May and we had some lovely walks. The house and Amari valley has a place in our hearts and we long to be back.
