The Hotel Mayer in Sankt Martin am Grimming is a nice little spot on the trail to Schladming. It is a particularly good stop for a coach party who can take over the entire place in this reasonably picturesque village in the foothills of the mountains. The service is good, the rooms are small but reasonable, and the hosts provide a nice homely feel to their establishment.
Winter in this part of the world is not the warmest season and Hotel Mayer is not the hottest hotel you could stay in. The walls are thinner than is typical in Austria and sound travels through them. Still, in a coach party of somewhere around 40 we had no difficulty in getting a good night's sleep.
What was surprising is the quality of the provisions. The food and drink is very good and there were even highly edible vegetarian options. In anticipation of or after a hard day's skiing it is a really relaxing and friendly place to stay in.
For anyone who likes rustic charm in their stays this is a good place. It is about 15- 20mins drive from Schladming and there are several peaks in the Schladming area to try. For high end luxury this isn't the ideal place but for those who like to experience the slower pace in a rural part of the world it is worth checking in.More
