We had a really god Time at Roy's place. He offered to help us out at eng point and it was just very relaxed and beautiful. The house is well furnished and has any interior one can need. The nature around makes us just speechless, so great is it! We hope to come back soon!
Driving into the holiday guest house, we wondered if we were going to make it? The rough bush track is a challenge for conventional vehicles but it is definitely worth the effort! The location is on the edge of Lake Dlugie (long lake) and it is as picturesque as the photos suggest, with a pontoon providing convenient access right to the water's edge. It's an idyllic, private, secluded spot except for one significant point. You are NEVER alone!!!
Roy and Cecilia are friendly and helpful enough, but they are not natural hosts. Unfortunately, they (and their pets) are part of the package. No matter how hard they try to be inconspicuous, it is hard not to shake the feeling you are being observed the whole time.
The guest house is supposed to accommodate eight people but with only a single bathroom and no washing facilities, it would certainly not be comfortable. Bedrooms and facilities were neat, tidy and well equipped, but the whole place could do with a good, spring clean. It was explained the tap water was not good for drinking, yet only 10 litres of bottled water was supplied for our 7-day stay.
Our best moments were spent on the water discovering the lakes and canals by canoe; and at night coming home to the grill pit and barbecue where we hosted family and friends on a couple of occasions. Despite Roy's assurances, these 'extra' facilities were charged at a considerable extra cost (200 zloty for 2 X canoe hire and 2 X use of grill pit). It was also rather embarrassing to tell our guests - admittedly there was a crowd of 20 or so on our second day - not to flush the toilets as the hosts were concerned the septic might overflow!
For a nature refuge, we could not reconcile the two dogs (as friendly as they are) and four cats on the property. The onus remains on the guests to keep them out and the hosts to keep them in, which is really not very satisfactory for anyone, including the pets! Sadly, both dogs have learned to associate guests with food and despite our best efforts, they were constantly around when we were eating. It seemed a travesty to keep doors closed in such a beautiful setting but we learned the hard way this was necessary after one of the cats managed to 'mark' its spot in the lounge room.
We left 2 nights early with no suggestion of a refund or discount from our hosts. In fact, the only further contact was 10 days after our departure, an email from Roy insinuating we may have been responsible for the disappearance of an important piece of grill equipment that we had neither used nor knew about. Thankfully, it turned up but there was no hint of an apology for the distress caused to us.
Guest House Chycina is in a beautiful location and may suit some but unfortunately for the reasons outlined, it did not work out for us.
Wonderful chalet accommodation, clean and comfortable. The balcony is great for watching the sun set and the patio and pretty garden ideal for eating al fresco. Roy and Cecylia are friendly, helpful and nothing is too much trouble. Plenty to do from forest walks, playing Boules, and canoeing on the lake. We saw a Beaver, Kingfisher and bird of prey whilst out on the water. The peace and scenery are amazing. Swim in the lake or get up early to watch the sunrise over the lake as the mist clears. Truly spectacular. With great food and local restaurants if you can tear yourself away, this is truly a magical place. A wonderful relaxing holiday and we can't wait to return.
We had a wonderful 2 week family holiday here with our teenage boys in July 2016. The large chalet-style house was spotlessly clean and well maintained. It proved very spacious for our family of four and provided for all of our needs. Our boys quickly claimed the big upstairs room with a balcony looking out over the large garden and out towards the lake and we took the downstairs double room which was cooler in the warm weather.
We love nature, so found this a very good location on the shore of a beautiful lake, surrounded by forest. During our stay we saw hares, deer, pine martens and red squirrels within metres of the house and the garden positively buzzed with butterflies. As the weather was excellent during our stay, we normally ate our meals sat out on the picnic table on the newly built patio enjoying the flowers in the garden.
We made good use of the outdoor activities available including swimming from the beach at the end of the garden and paddling the canoe and sit-on-top kayaks to explore the local interconnected lakes. During our stay we also hired mountain bikes in Chycina for two days and had great fun exploring the quiet country roads, tracks and forest paths nearby. When our boys had a moment to spare they were normally to be found playing with a Frisbee in the large garden, cooking sausages over the campfire in the covered BBQ pit or playing with our host’s friendly dogs.
The house lies at the end of a 1 km forest track easily accessible in our hire car. We found it to be a good base within an easy drive of good days out. We had two brilliant visits to Poznan (90 minutes away), an interesting day exploring Zielona Gora (60 minutes away), good fun on pedalos at the beautiful lakeside village of Lagow (30 minutes away) and a 4 hour private tour with an English-speaking guide exploring the amazing MRU underground bunker complex at Pniewo (30 minutes away) which finished with a ride in an armoured personnel carrier that was a real hit with our boys.
Grocery shopping during our visit was straightforward. We made use of the small village shop 15 minutes walk away in Chycina, the well-stocked general store the next village of Bledzew and the Tesco and Lidl supermarkets in Miedzyrzecz as well as the great local markets. To help us get our holiday off to a good start, Roy and Cecylia kindly accompanied us on our first shopping trip which was a great help. Cecylia’s home-made jams and preserves also proved a real treat.
The language barrier was less of a challenge than we had feared. With the help of a small phrase book, some basic Polish phrases taught to us by Cecylia, and many of the Poles in shops and restaurants understanding some English we had no real difficulties.
Overall, this was one of the best value and fun-filled family holidays we’ve ever had. This area of Poland is so much prettier and interesting than we expected, Roy and Cecylia are wonderfully friendly and helpful hosts and the holiday house was perfect for our needs. We’d thoroughly recommend it.
