The Great Divide Lodge
Ranked #2 of 2 Hotels in Field
Reviewed 26 July 2012

I waited too long to book lodging and chose the Great Divide Lodge based on availability. The pictures on their website made it look great and when I called for reservations, I took the parade to the "newly remodeled" room with a view of the mountains and lake. The view was of a small lake on the other side of the highway and the surrounding peaks but the room was definitely not updated other than fresh paint. The bed was squeaky and the mattress was very uncomfortable. The room got stuffy and the only means of cooling it off was to turn on a small fan and open the sliding door and risk letting in the mosquitoes. I did not get much rest.

We booked in for 1 night on our way down from Calgary to Kelowna. Room pictures on the website look nothing like the room you get when you arrive.

What greeted us was a very small room with 1 double bed and 1 twin bed, each pulled up against the wall with one bedside table between to share. The only lamp for the room did not work, no phone in the room to ask for assistance so walked downstairs to "reception" and was given a lightbulb to change myself (at $99 a night thought that was the least staff could do). The bedside table had names carved in it, paint in the walls are peeling. Bath tub was rusting and there were dead bugs on the floor.

Staff made us pay upfront for the room and are very rude.

Stay away!

This hotel is run-down but clean, the staff is friendly and accomodating and it seems like they are trying hard. However, I have to give it a poor rating because there are just too many things wrong for me to overlook them. The towels are threadbare and there is no hair dryer, which are not fatal flaws. But we ended up starting our day at 5:00 a.m. because the bed was so incredibly uncomfortable and made such loud noises when we shifted position, that we could not sleep. There is no air conditioning but the sliding door to the balcony stuck so bad that you had to lean your full weight into it to get it to budge. The hotel is right on a main highway and very close to train tracks so if the bed doesn't keep you awake, the trains probably will.

Stayed one night on route from Vancouver to Red Deer. Convenient location on the No 1 highway near Lake Louise. Very modest accommodation & we seemed to be the only guests. Pet friendly as we had a dog with us. The rates are less than Lake Louise proper but justifiably so. However the rates seem to be unclear as the website states per double occupancy, the phone reservation was per room & the road sign was another rate! Go figure! The view rooms overlook the very noisy highway. Not great for an uninterrupted sleep. There is a bar & restaurant. Food is expensive & the home cooking is a fairy tale.

Room Tip: Take the non view rooms. Bring your own supper. Negotiate your rates & do not accept their init...

Although it is nice that some rooms have new flooring and windows, and our room was clean (mostly) I would never pay to stay there unless there was an emergency on the highway. There was blood on one of the pillows, a strange smell in the room, and the walls are paper thin. No phone to call the desk (or for help in case of fire...guess we could've climbed out the window and slid down the roof) to ask them to shut the party down next door. Gross self serve breakfast area but the served breakfast was ok.

Room Tip: If all you want is a cheap roof to sleep under while you sleep and don't really care about anyth...
