“A Two Hour Tour -Unlike Gilligan, we got back”

Star Charters Day Tour
Reviewed 3 July 2017

Took the Evening Sunset Tour. Greattime was had by all. Both the Captain and the crew member were friendly, personable and went out of their way to make sure everyone had a good time. There was a young family there and the two boys got chances (along with everyone else) to raise the sail, steer the ship. And for the adventuresome adults, do a Titanic pose on the bowsprit. Take a jacket as once you are out of the harbour, it can get chilly. We spent most of the time under sail and there are binoculars onboard to zoom in and see the sights.

We took a few sailing trips during our month in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. They were all short (1-2 hrs.), overcrowded and overpriced, but this one was the best of the lot. Nice, friendly, knowledgeable crew, a longer trip than the others at a little over 2 hours, and magnificent scenery. We paid $74 CAD for two adults. Unlike other day sail cruises, which use their engines for most of trip, the Eastern Star actually SAILED in and out of the harbor, along the cliffs and out to sea during a lovely sunset.

We only had one day/night in Lunenberg and thought this would be a great way to see the area. It was perfect. I believe it was a two hour tour starting at 11 am in September. I did not dress appropriately ... you definitely need to dress as if the temperature were 20 degrees cooler. Luckily they had blankets onboard which I was thankful for! We saw lots of wildlife, buildings and boats. This is a must if you want to take photo's of the breathtaking view of Lunenberg from the bay. Fair warning, there are lots of zig-zagging on the way back to the bay ... not for the faint of heart. But we all had a great time and held on tight. The crew was very funny and knowledgeable. Would definitely do it again ... and dress warmer!

Great experience watching Capt. Keith Merrill and his crew sail the Eastern Star, a 48 ft. sailing ketch to the pine studded cliffs and caves outside the Lunenburg Breakwater and Lighthouse and learn some of the finer points of setting the sails and tacking in the leeward wind by reading tell tails. If you want to help out and learn about the craft, Keith will give you a chance to steer, or help turn a winch handle to set the sails. We had a windward out but an exciting leeward tack coming back when we were keeled over to one side and then the other to really gain some speed on our return.
Capt. Keith read the winds from his experiences of sailing the Lunenburg harbor for years.
Great excitement and an unforgettable experience at sunset!
