This lodge has caring staff, excellent alpine hiking terrain for all levels, and exceptional food.

The weigh-ins and helicopter ride organization was very efficient. We’ve been to similar lodges in the past and this process has taken hours. Here the ground staff was on the ball. Delicious scones and amazing alpine scenery greeted us after a short helicopter ride to the lodge.

Florina and Charlotte, our hiking guides took turns taking us on scenic hikes in their backyard, a place you can tell they truly love. With lots of well marked trails and a map for independent hiking, and guides for a slow group and a “fast” (still lots of time to take photos and rest on steep uphills, or at one of the many scenic viewpoints) group, it was easy to find a hike for your ability and pace. Thanks go out to Charlotte for kicking steps into multiple snowfields so we could confidently cross the slopes, to get to the fabulous Mirror Lake Ridge. And thanks to the goats for joining us on Moon Hill and on the trail to Goat Cafe.

Henric, the chef created masterpieces for snacks and three-course dinners. The food was tasty, full of creative flavours and presentation. We expected simple hearty food, served family style, not food fit for a fancy restaurant! Care, attention and time was put into the dishes served. For example, the Chicken all-a Moon Hill included chicken breasts shaped like a moon! Seconds were on offer, if you didn’t fill up on the irresistible freshly baked European-style bread. Although we’ll eat anything, it seemed that other guests were well accommodated with different food for their special diets. For breakfast, instead of the usual greasy bacon and eggs, Nicoline served up fresh berries and crepes one day, Swiss muesli with fresh fruit and egg bread the next, and fruit and cinnamon buns the day we flew out. Eggs were offered every morning, so one morning I had a perfectly poached egg.

It was great having the indoor flush toilet for night-time pees. The showers were welcome at the end of a long hike, though the temperature was hard to control. And to the staff that cleans the outdoor toilets - THANK-YOU!

We’ll have to return to try hiking on our own. Maybe do some longer hikes to work off the multiple pieces of delicious cakes and breads.

We had heard so many legends about SME, that we wanted to try it for ourselves:
The ski-touring is spectacular and if you're a decent skier and in good shape you'll enjoy it even more! We got to ski with The Legend himself (Ruedi) as well as amazing tail guides (2 of which were former Canadian Olympians!!).
All of the staff is incredibly friendly and obviously enjoys working there which translates into great customer service. Even the family dog (Sven) is a hoot!
The food is 5-star hotel worthy!! Granted anything would taste good after skiing for 8 hours, but it was nonetheless exceptional. Home made bread, cakes, organic vegetables, you name it. Breakfast was high energy for the long day ahead. The lunch buffet was solid. Après-ski snacks very decadent and the dinners were to die for, with plenty for second rounds.
Accommodations were great. Rooms were assigned ahead of time amongst each group of travelers with single or double rooms for whom is traveling solo or as a couple. Considering you are literally in the middle of nowhere, having indoor plumbing and running cold and hot water is a luxury. Hot showers and sauna every night after skiing goes a long way towards making the next day even better.
And if you really can't be without internet, there's is even free Wi-Fi (albeit limited given satellite connection). I recommend a good book for some reading before hitting the sack by 8:30 PM...
Will definitely go again.

My daughter and I are from Minnesota and were looking for a way to spend a weekend outdoors together. We read about SME in a local newspaper and were drawn to the idea of a remote hiking lodge reached only by helicopter, an onsite chef, and wifi in such a remote location (we both had some work we had to do). After speaking with Kim and Estee in the office, we knew we had to try SME. The booking was easy. We also invited a friend with whom I'd done extensive hiking to join us for the trip.

In summary, we made the right choice. The helicopter trip to the Durrand Glacier Chalet was a fabulous experience for each of us. Once we landed, and while the helicopter made additional transfers, we were treated to freshly baked breakfast goods. What a great start! From there we spent three days engaging in various degrees of hiking and loitering in the mountains. Furthermore, we enjoyed all types of weather including rain, snow and brilliant sunshine. What a beautiful trip!

The lodge is immaculately maintained, the beds are VERY comfortable, the staff is friendly and engaging, and the food is spectacular (you'd never know you're in a remote lodge in the mountains)! And the scenery! The views are great, the air is crisp and the stars are magnificent. It doesn't get better!

In retrospect, our reactions during our three day stay were true. We enjoyed every aspect of our visit and would go back in a heartbeat! Thank you to everyone at SME and to our fellow guests who made it all the more interesting. We look forward to our next visit! My wife might have to come along on the next one (despite the helicopter ride)!

In Revelstoke we were greeted by Kim on behalf of SME who briefed us and then we were driven to a helicopter pad. From there a short helicopter flight took us to the chalet.
On our arrival at the chalet we were very warmly welcomed by Ruedi, Nicoline, Estee and Hendrik. After a short orientation we prepared and packed our lunches and within 90 minutes from our arrival we started our first hikes in two different groups, led by Nicoline and Estee. The hiking guides were very knowledgeable and maintained a pace which suited all hikers. We found the trails to be well designed , build and maintained. We hiked all 3 days on different trails and really enjoyed our hikes very much.
I was very fortunate to have Nicoline as my "private" guide and I enjoyed hiking and talking with her all three days.
The food was very delicious, nutritious and tasty. After returning from the hikes, there was coffee, tea, cake and savouries for the guests. Dinner was always a delicious big three course meal. All food was prepared from fresh ingredients.
In our opinion, food would be on top, hospitality, accommodation, hiking and feel at home environment, we would definitely rate at five star level. Our experience was very unique and we enjoyed every minute of the stay. We were a smaller group and got along very well with each other. We have nothing negative to say about this business.
Kudos to Nicoline, Ruedi, Estee and Hendrik.
And thanks to the mountain goats to come and say "good bye" on the last morning.

This hiking adventure was even more spectacular than I had hoped for. The helicopter transfers were efficient; they had us hiking very quickly after we arrived. The hikes were varied and adjusted according to ability; the views were amazing and even late season there were still wildflowers.
The guides expertly pushed me outside of my comfort level and helped me all the way. They never made me feel like I couldn't do it and I was never worried for my safety.
The onsite chef served us outstanding meals and snacks and easily accommodated the diet restrictions of our group.
Our group of 15 had quite a varied range of abilities so 3 guides on all days would've been helpful. Only other comment is something other than cinnamon buns for breakfast on our last day would've been nice. Even a buffet style toast and cereal would've been better.

Thank you for your review and suggestion for the last morning's breakfast. We take your suggestions seriously and served fresh scones, fresh cinnamon buns and hand picked alpine huckleberries for breakfast on our last exchange day. Three guides for 15 guests makes it easier for everyone! We hope that you will be back.
Kind regards, Nicoline
