The Three Cocks Coaching Inn
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Three Cocks
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 14 September 2011

The Three Cocks is located close to some of the finest scenery in the world. From here you are half a day's walk from Hay Bluff or the Twmpa. If you start early in the day you can get to Capel y Fin and back. Also not to be missed is the lovely walk along the bank of the Wye from Glasbury to the bridge at Broughrood. That said, the hotel is right on the main road which is a negative point. The inn is a large, imposing place of the Olde Worlde type and this is also reflected inside. Roy the proprietor is friendly and helpful, especially if you take his advice and do things his way rather than yours. Some of the staff are the nicest Welsh womenyou could ever find. Some staff can be brusque almost to the point of rudeness. I spent three nights here in a small room which was adequate but not very comfortable, although the modern bathroom was first rate. Breakfasts are fine and the coffee is particularly good, but they do need to find a way to keep it hot. Dinners are more problematic largely because the menu does not change. If there is little on the menu to your liking and you have something particular in mind, Roy will try to get it in--if he approves of what you want. Rates are reasonable and if you are satisfied with what you get you will consider it good value.

We loved the calm and warm atmosphere and very comfortable room. The cuisine was excellent and we wanted for nothing. We would recommend it to our friends.

Though our room was very small, the bath was lovely and the bed comfortable.
Food was only fair - breakfast was fine, but dinner food was badly overcooked.
Hosts are a delight and extra helpful. The inn itself is beautiful and atmospheric as well as well placed.
WiFi unreliable.

Room Tip: Get rear-facing large room.

We stayed here while attending a wedding in the locality. First of all the correspondence via email while planning the trip was both welcoming and informative. We were arriving early but received a fantastic welcome from the owner. Although we were early our rooms were prepared for us as soon as we arrived. The rooms were emaculately clean to the highest standard. The rooms were lovely and extremely comfortable. The proprietor also helped us organise a taxi to and from the wedding venue and was there to welcome us back and even opened the bar for a nightcap! The bed was clean and comfortable and a good night's sleep was had by all. The next morning a full breakfast was supplied with the usual breakfast choices but the cooked breakfast itself was in a league of its own with a choice of eggs ranging from fried, poached, scrambled to an omlette. It was an amazing meal that lunch wasn't needed at all!
I would recomend this place to anyone travelling in the area or even anyone looking for a nice place for a break. The standard is high from start to finish from the decor, to the cleanliness to the food. I would challenge anyone to write a bad review about this place. Many b and B's and hotels could learn a lot from Mr Duke. Thank you so much!

Room Tip: Try to speak to the owner beforehand

We stayed at the Three Cocks Hotel for the Hay Festival this year - what a great choice! Roy and Judith provide a warm welcome and are great hosts. The rooms are full of character, the beds extremely comfortable and the breakfasts cooked to order. Although there was no TV in the rooms, the hotel has a lovely bar and lounge to relax in and made the stay very sociable. We didn't get a chance to sample the restaurant, but we did enjoy the coffee shop. We would certainly choose the Three Cocks again and highly recommend it.
