“Exellent hotel, just in the wrong place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2011

We have just had a week at the Solplay and it is an excellent hotel. We had a two bedroom suite, which was huge. As well as the two bedrooms, there were two bathrooms, one with bath and one with shower. There was a large living, dining and kitchen area and a huge balcony, that could be accessed from the main room and the two bedrooms. The balcony has a table and chairs and loungers.

The facilities at the hotel are excellent. Not only are there large indoor and outdoor pools, there is a also a very well fitted gym. The restaurant serves good quality meals. There is a standard menu and a buffet style dinner every other night. The buffet includes a mix of cold fodds, two choices of hot meals, soup, a wide range of desserts and juices. At 17 euro, it is excellent value. Snacks and smaller meals can be bought in the bar. The steak sandwich at 9.50 euro was good value.

However, what makes this hotel, is the sheer friendliness and professionalism of the staff. We couldn't fault any of them.

I couldn't decide whether to award the Solplay, four or five stars, but decided on five as I have judged the hotel rather than its location. There is nothing wrong with Linda a Velha, it's just that there is nothing to do in the immedaite vicinity of the hotel. If you are happy to make use of facilties and to eat at the hotel each evening that's fine. Personally, we would have liked to be able to walk to some good quality restaurants. Notwithstanding this, the hotel provides an excellent free shuttle bus service. This can take you into Lisbon, whre you can stay for 6 hours, or to Estoril for the beaches, where again you can stay for around 6 hours. We used the service a number of times, occasionally only one way, prefering the flexibility of making our way back by train (and then a 15-20 minute walk). It's worth mentioning the train, as the services are regular and only cost 3 euro to Lisbon or Estoril return, 1.95 euro one way.

The whole family loved the Solplay, but just wished that there was more to see and do in the immediate area.

Family of 4 stayed here for 5 nights in July and both the kids and adults loved this hotel. Very helpful staff, nice breakfast buffet, lovely 2-bedroom apartments and great facilities both indoor and outdoor. We used the swimmingpools both indoor and outdoor, and for those who like a workout indoor you have great training facilities. Also worth to mention is Bruno who is responsible for the children activities. He is very good with the kids and they loved him. We will certainly recommend this Hotel to everyone.

My husband often travels to Portugal for work, and I make sure I tag along with him when he does. He always stays at Solplay. Every time we are met with impeccable service and facilities.

This year we stayed in a fine suite with a dining area, living room, kitchenette, spacious bedroom with a king-size bed and huge outdoor patio that had doors leading to it from the bedroom and living room.

Remember, this is an Apartment-Hotel, you will need to find a store to buy small items such as paper towels, beverages you like along other snacks and foods you can keep cool in the refrigerator. American travelers: they do not have coffee makers in the room. They have ‘electric water pitchers’ that heat water quickly. (I brought instant coffee, tea and instant soup packages.) The room we were in did not have a microwave. If you need to do some laundry, there is even a ‘washer/dryer’ machine in your room. According to the instructions, it may take several hours to do a load of laundry. I found a 30-mintue Quick Wash setting, which helped shorten the laundry time. Check out the manual before you start pushing buttons.

The buffet breakfast spread is enormous. There are hot items such as eggs, meat and vegetables as well has cold cereals, sweet rolls, toast, cheese, deli meats. There are many choices of beverages too: "American" coffee, Café espresso tea, cocoa and cold juices. I made sure I joined my husband for the morning 'feast'!

They have two swimming pools one indoor and one outdoors. The indoor pool is usually warmer and is long enough to do laps if you wish. There is a Jacuzzi next to the indoor pool as well. The outdoor pool's water tends to be cooler. It has very comfortable lounge chairs and full-service bar where you can order lunch to eat poolside. There is also a Health Club, sauna, steam room and they have Spa and Beauty parlor services available.

The bar is open in the evening---serving spirits, beer, wine and our favorite drink: Caipirinha (a Brazilian Margarita). The restaurant is also open for dinner in the evening. They also have room service, if you wish to have a meal in your room.

PLEASE NOTE: This hotel is located in the outskirts of Lisbon. If you do not have a rental car, you are at the mercy of taxicabs; the front desk will hail one for you. You may also reserve a Hotel Limo or Town Car. The limo fees depend on your destination.

We enjoy our visits to Portugal and find Solplay a quiet, comfortable place to stay.

We picked this hotel as we were attending the Optimus Alive music festival, and it was a twenty minute walk away. Hotel was exceptionally clean with very friendly and helpful staff. The room catered for all our needs with a small kitchenette so if we missed breakfast we could cook our own. The grounds were well kept and poolside area was lovely. Would definatly go back. The hotel was a 10 minute taxi ride away from Lisbon but taxis were very cheap.
