The good bits...

This is a beautiful, beautiful resort. If you decide to stay, make sure you get one of the ocean villas - you dont come to somewhere like this to look at the jungle/mangrove area etc.

The accommodation we had was very clean, modern, in good repair - no complaints at all.

The food in all the restaurants was very good, and the choice of the fish in the AluAlu one was second to none. The staff are very enthusiastic and keen to help (but more on this later).

The management were happy to get involved when any issues arose.

The sister resort around the corner (Bunga Reya) is a free boat ride away and definitely worth a day trip for a bit of variety.

The bad bits

The staff are very enthusuiastic, but need to work on their english. Far far too many times did we order something, and the wrong thing appear. If they dont understand something, they need to know that it is 100% ok to say "I dont understand, let me get a colleague". That said, once you take this into consideration, relax, and lower your expectations, it is completely liveable-with - we certainly werent ever billed erroneously, or charged for anything incorrectly. End of day - if you need something doing promptly and correctly first time round, ask to speak with one of the managers.

Storms - more on this later, but resort staff should be more proactive in checking villas (umbrellas/terraces/etc) as storms come in, and much much quicker at repairing, tidying and restoring things once the storm has passed.

Theft - another reviewer mentioned this and I should have been more careful, but while out for dinner I left an iPad out the safe so it could download my email. Suffice to say it disappeared during turndown while we were at dinner. The Security manager was very thorough and arranged for a Police statement to be taken, but it didnt bring the ipad back.

Dive compressor - there is amazing diving to be done round here, but if you arent a diver, you may find the noise from the dive compressor irritating. It could easiily be moved / insualted / quietened but as it stands, its can be annoying noise in the morning.

Things to be aware of

There is a new resort being built across the bay. this wasnt noisy, but they were burning a lot of waste and it was an eyesore. I think its due to open in a month though, so this shouldnt necesarily impact future guests.

Weather - borneo weather is generally hot with occasional storms. expect 1.5days sun, and half a days rain/storm in a 2 day period.

The sea is not as clean as other areas of the world. The resort make a good effort to keep it clean, but especially post a storm, there may be litter. This was the same everywhere we visited around Borneo.

Room Tip: Ocean view. Anything less and you will feel jealous and want to change when you arrive.

I was a bit anxious when i saw photos floating around of garbage in the ocean. I think that might have been after a storm though because when we went, the ocean looked great! We paid extra for an ocean-facing villa and though it is dear, it is totally worth it (I don't really see the point in a jungle-facing one). The deck went straight into the ocean and we spent most of our time on the deck, just sunbaking or ducking in for a swim. The villa itself was very luxurious and comfortable. We ate at both restaurants at the resort and also enjoyed sundown cocktails (first one free) at the bar.

Went for a day trip during mid school holiday with family.
It was a very nice & informative trip at this MERC. We learned a lot about the ocean ecology system. We have a chance to touch & hold the live starfish & sea cucumber.
We also took part in contribution to coral reef regerenation by planting a coral fragment on that day. A certificert will be given to u too just paid RM15.....
This package included a 4-course lunch.
We really enjoyed the lovely lunch & the perfect scenery @ this Gayana Resort.
Dont forget to bring along your sunglasses, sunblock & hat as well...The most important is yr camera! Cheers!

This is a very tough resort to review. Mainly because the biggest problems at Gayana aren't of its own making. They are making the best of a somewhat average situation. Even by doing a lot of research before you leave there are going to be some information gaps that could trip you up.

The resort is located a 10 min ferry ride away from KK proper. It's just around a headland and attached to the shores of the largest island in the marine park. The park sees a lot of activity and there is a lot of shipping around. The water clarity and quality was always an issue the entire stay. There is definitely a problem with garbage and floating rubbish that plagues the entire area. The snorkling and diving environment is compromised. It's still pretty good but is it "tourist brochure" or eco-adventure worthy? Most decidedly not. This isn't wilderness paradise or even a decent beach in Thailand. KK is quite and interesting city. Not the most picturesque place but it has a certain energy. In fact, we might have been better off staing on the mainland.

Gayana has a nice litte infinity pool, is reasonably sized but overpriced. The service quality was excellent at all times and the staff were very friendly. But there is ongoing construction across the bay that is spoiling the sightlines and the place doesn't exactly feel that isolated. Food options are limited and much more expensive than the mainland, although everything we had from the resort's main kitchen was good.

I had concerns about this resort based on it's proximity to downtown KK and the harbour/shipping. Those concerns were realized. We never really used the stairs from our bungalow to the water because it was so weedy, dirty and uninviting.
The resort has charm and a great staff and appears to be fighting an uphill battle that they might be losing.
