“Very disappointing”

The price of £350 for January 7th – 14th was extortionate. We discovered that this type of property at Kinegie Manor can be rented out for a week, when all the facilities are open for as little as £189. In Winter all the facilities at the Manor– most notably the swimming pool bar and restaurant, are closed. There is no wi fi at this time.
22 Old Court – which is the address of this property is one of 50 very small rather grim units. On arrival my husband described it as a rundown prison camp. To call this mean unit ‘Trevarrack Cottage’ is misleading. On arrival I was quite devastated and felt like turning round and going home.
Kinegie Manor is a holiday camp. It is about a mile uphill from Gulval and 2 miles from the centre of Penzance. It is not safe to walk on the road as it is steeply uphill with blind bends. So you have to drive everywhere. There are many lovely places within easy driving distance and in January the roads are quiet.
The rental unit is very small. Outside there is one parking space at the front. At the rear there is a small paved area. The area is not private or secure. There is nowhere to put anything so if for example you bring bikes there is no secure storage. The rental unit is in a terrace of similar properties. If the neighbours are at home you will hear them
Downstairs is a kitchen/diner/lounge. The kitchen is adequate but everything is low quality. There is a single sink. No bowl. Hot water is from a very small tank which supplies a small bowl of water and then you wait 10 minutes for your next hot water. There are no pan lids. No means of making coffee. The microwave should be in a museum. I could go on.
We could not get a good enough TV signal to make watching possible.
There are 2 sofas. They may have been nice once but now they are dirty with last season’s sand under the cushions. All the soft furnishings and cushions are in need of a good clean.
There is carpet on the stairs. Dust clouds up when it is walked on.
There was tinsel left over from the Christmas rental everywhere – including under the lavatory seat. Was this lavatory cleaned properly for our arrival – I think not. The cottage needs to be cleaned thoroughly between clients. The standard of cleanliness here was very poor with dirt in all corners. The bathroom is very small with an adequate electric shower. The basin is supplied with the same inadequate hot water from the kitchen.
The double bedroom is tiny. There is just space for a double bed and on one side is a bedside unit. There is a wardrobe (bottom of the range IKEA) and a chair (with a filthy cover). Lying in bed there is a lovely view of a loft hatch black with grime.
The twin bedroom is larger. The mattress covers are very dirty with a covering of sand – presumably from last summer.
There is no proper heating in the rental unit. When we arrived it was cold and damp. There are 3 electric plug in heaters which do warm the place up after a while.

On a positive note all the beds were very comfortable.

Thank you for your review. My price structure is based on the fact that this is a privately owned cottage within the grounds of Kenegie Manor. Our pricing is very much in line with all the privately owned properties. Kenegie Manor is not a camp, it is a holiday park with leisure facilities and restaurant. It certainly is not a place that you can call a camp. .I do feel that is very unfair to complain about the site facilities not being open, in my description I do state that the onsite facilities close from 31st October to 2nd Week in February. Onsite house keeping go in before every rental and make sure that the property is thoroughly cleaned and that fresh linen is provided. I have now owned this property for a year and rented it well over 20 times and the reviews we have had have been second to none, not just from this site. We pride ourselves on the cleanliness of the property and the kitchen is extremely well equipped more than adequate for a self catering break. With regards to being able to make coffee, the kitchen does have a water supply so you should of been able to fill the kettle up and be able to make yourself a cup of coffee. Everywhere looks grimmer in the winter but Kenegie Manor is known for its lovely peaceful grounds and I personally and all of my other visitors and also returning visitors agree with this. I'm interested to learn which prison camps have this degree of loveliness. You seemed like you were keen to make this vacation difficult as you contacted me a couple of days before arrival asking how the they cleaned the linen. You arrived and within 2 minutes on the phone to me with issues, although I live in London I was able to arrange an engineer immediately to deal with the issues. not a word of thanks, but a barrage and bombardment of rudeness from you. You said you could possible not stay at this place, but yet you managed to stay the full week. I know I certainly would not stay a week in a prison camp. You made very upsetting comments towards my home and this I told you. Again back to the description, no where do I state this property has full gas central heating, but there is more than enough electric heating to keep you warm on the coldest of days. As for the steep bends in the road, I can not change the rural location or the geographical area in Cornwall, but then countryside and sea views are not everyone's taste. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and I appreciate all kinds of feedback, even if it is unjust.

Liked best: Bed and mattress
Liked least: Cubical shower - but only because it is smaller than what I am used to.

Hi...we found Trevarrack Cottage by accident and took a chance as we haven't gone self catering for about 30 years.
The cottage was under new management and the new owners went out of their way to please..The cottage was spotless with fresh linen on the beds....we haven't got any young children but the few children we did see seem to be enjoying themselves in what appears to be a really safe environment..it's close to the popular tourists spots...with full lists of what is where and how to get there. New owners Fran and Rich keep up the good work and we will definitely return..thank you.

“Great Cottage, lovely location”

We had a really good experience from start to finish. The cottage was clean and well maintained, it had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. The holiday was great value with excellent facilities on site for the family. The heated pool was lovely. Everything we wanted to visit was within a short drive away making it the perfect base. We look forward to our return, just booked a week in the summer. (Hopefully will be warmer weather).
