“If I could score this 10 I would!”
Reviewed 24 February 2017 for a stay in November 2016

This is by far (and I am really well travelled) the best place I have ever stayed. Erin the owner was welcoming and lovely and provided us with some basic essentials (thank you for the wine and bacon in this "basic"!). The lodge is isolated, completely on its own. At night you can't see any lights of other habitation, can't see or hear any roads - all you hear are kiwis scuffling about and moreporks! It is bliss and I would stay here at the drop of a hat. The whole place is off grid but luxurious.

“Outstanding in Every Sense of the Word”
Reviewed 27 December 2016 for a stay in December 2016

There aren't enough adjectives to describe this place. It is absolutely what it says on the tin, a complete hideaway, hidden from everyday life, nestled in the bush a few kilometres outside of Kataia. It's a bit of a challenge getting up the hill to the cabin, but the views make it totally worthwhile. The cabin itself is a marvel, beautifully crafted by the owner and tastefully appointed by Erin.

We had pre-warned Erin that we would be arriving on motorbikes and was told that the steep drive would be no problem for us. However, on arrival it became obvious that we didn't have the off-road experience to get the bikes up the hill. What could have been a real issue was solved by John and Erin calling on their friends and finding us a car to borrow for the 2 days we were there. This is above and beyond the call of duty and without John and Erin going that extra mile we would have had the nightmare of trying to find accomodation over Christmas at very short notice. We simply couldn't be more grateful for this level of customer service.

If you have to stay anywhere in the Far North, stay here!

“Wonderful, tranquil bush retreat”
Reviewed 17 July 2016 for a stay in July 2016

My partner and I have just returned from six nights staying at Fern Ridge. We had such a lovely time. Erin and John have provided a well thought-out and extremely comfortable place to enjoy the beauty of this mountain retreat. We loved that this was an eco friendly place to stay which is in line with our own ethos, but it was also very luxurious which was so nice as a treat after a busy time at work. We needed a rest and that is what we got. The view is spectacular and the outside bath so beautifully relaxing. We really appreciated all John's and Erin's efforts.

“The dream made reality”
Reviewed 8 January 2016 for a stay in December 2015

It is very rare to find places like Fern Ridge, a vision fully realised, to be shared with others. Erin and John, the creators, are just as rare, their passion and ingenuity imbue the place and make you fall in love with your surroundings as much as with the beautifully designed house.

This area of Northland is ignored, maligned, and little visited, which is a puzzling oversight, but also a great opportunity to experience authentic Northland life without the kitschiness of mass tourism that you get in places like Paihia or the smugness of Russell. This side is more spiritual and far more spacious than the Bay of Islands, the people are more interesting, and the wildnerness of the Mangamuka ranges is awe-inspiring. Ahipara Beach and Ninety Mile Beach are wild and open but excellent for swimming and surfing at both low and high tide. This coast is where you feel the transition of the soul between worlds, as in the Maori legend. And the outside bath at Fern Lodge is where your body will feel it, as you lie there with a glass of wine and watch the changing light over the green Mangamukas all the way to the coast. Time stops. You discover peace and magic. It was very hard to leave after a week of this.

Things to do, if you do leave the house (our favourite days were staying in, cooking, and listening out for birds - kiwis at night: visit the antique shops in Kaitaia and Awanui (largest collection of Japanese swords in the Pacific); walk in the Kauri forest, shop in Bell's Grocers in Kaitaia (great veges and meats), visit Mangatete Potteries on Route 10 east of Kaitaia (Mac & Maureen Lewis), buy tasty olive oil on the way to Doubtless Bay from Lady Di's olive grove (it's the name of the woman), and visit the two wineries on the way to Ahipara beach.

But above all, let John take you out fishing, if he is available, as you'll be hard pressed to meet someone who is more in tune with the bush and the beach than him; an amazing and authentic person with unique charisma. Erin has provided all the finer touches in the house, including delicious NZ organic cosmetics, the softest robes that'll ever touch your skin, and the tap water is very tasty, direct from a spring.

Erin and John have created something peerless here: a perfect harmony of nature, culture, and comfort, and I can see us coming back in the years ahead, for a top-up.

“A luxury off-grid paradise full of generosity”
Reviewed 8 January 2016 for a stay in January 2016

You are completely free and cosseted in Fernridge. Magnificent views look far into the distance from its carefully positioned balconies. There are all kinds of unexpected luxuries (oils, soaps, the softest robes and sheets, tasty water) and a well stocked kitchen. The generosity of our hosts John and Erin was incredible. We were brought fresh fish and soup everyday so we ate like kings. Fern Ridge is magnificent log-cabin, built out of John and Erin’s love for bush and sea and it is done such with abundance and off-grid eco-care Being there was a great experience and by far the highlight of my NZ accommodations. Hopefully, I’ll make it back.

We also stayed in the Bay of Islands and I preferred the beaches and characters of the far north. There is actually more to see here. A definite five stars.
