“Lovely family holiday”
Reviewed 2 August 2018 for a stay in July 2018

Just recently returned from a lovely week at Owlswick. It was the heatwave week so weather was perfect. The cottage is very spacious with wardrobes and drawers in each bedroom. After reading the reviews we were not expecting too much. However we were pleasantly surprised at how lovely the cottage is. Set just off the main river - like a close off a main road - you are in the middle of the wildlife with ducks, swans, geese and Harry the heron frequent visitors. We were an all adult party - all over 55. Was ideal for my elderly parents who are in their 80s as the cottage is all on one level. The nearest pub food is The Ferry Inn which is closer to walk to than The Swann Inn. Come off the Island and turn right. It’s really lovely sitting outside and eating there. Takes around 15 mins slow walk. There is plenty of free parking there too. We went on the Southern Confort boat - pick up outside The Swan Inn - and would definitely recommend booking in advance as gets busy on some times. We had a fabulous relaxing week.

Thank you Denise for a wonderful and thorough review! So glad you all had a lovely time. Owlswick is a great property in such a perfect location regarding scenery and amenities :-) The Southern Comfort is really good fun too isn't it?! We hope to see you all again soon! “HBH Ellis Family in Horning”
Reviewed 26 May 2018 for a stay in May 2018

Coming from Australia and meeting up with our very pregnant daughter in law & son for a weeks holiday. It was raining when we arrived and there were 2 swans and a goose floating on the front grass lawn. The parking area was also under water - I suppose we have to expect this on the Broads. The wildlife was a constant visitor and lovely. We mainly booked this property as it stated en suite and the WiFi [essential for our pregnant lady.] Unfortunately the en suite is so small, It is inside a small cupboard in the bedroom she could not get into the shower! WiFi and mobile reception is extremely spasmodic and unreliable with no signal most of the time. The position of Owlswick is great; a short walk into the village and a choice of pubs and cafes. We hired a boat for the day which was fantastic; local discount from Carole in the hire hut behind the house. The property itself is in need of some TLC, it's tired. The floors are uneven - so the cooker door will not open all the way as it catches on the floor [health and safety?]. The photos are very deceptive regarding space; showing space in lounge but the dining table is in reality pushed up against the wall and bedroom doors in order to take the photo! No towels or tea towels, a problem for us coming from Australia we had to buy them specially! Overall; A lovely area, friendly locals but I would not recommend Owlswick, there are plenty of other properties in the same vicinity.

This property should NOT be advertised as having WiFi. It was non existent. A real downer. Also, no mobile reception on EE, but we had some reception with a phone via O2, to make quick calls with only. On arrival, cleanliness was not good, both bathroom sinks/taps filthy, with old toothpaste underneath...yuk! Don’t go if you have more than 6 people, as comfortable (if low), seating 2 x 3 seater settees only. One decent bathroom, onsuite is minuscule. Beds were very comfy. Lighting not adequate, and not enough/any not used electric sockets to move the uplighter. Also, small hifi system sitting pretty, but not near any electrical sockets, nor could we find one to move it to. Car park was muddy on arrival, and during the week we had a freak high tide (worst in 10 years so we were told), which flooded car park to 3 inch depth. Very awkward when we had no wellies. Car park for two cars needs some extra shale putting down, to stop muddy patches. All told, I would go to the same area, but not this property. After 10 years of visiting cottages, this was not a good one, except for where it was. Sorry.

Mid way through our week long stay and weather outside is light rain hence finding the time to write this review. There are four of us staying here and overall we are very satisfied with the cottage. Previous comments about cleanliness appear to have been addressed as the cottage was spotlessly clean when we arrived. Adequate space for the four of us although would not recommend for lager groups as comfortable seating is limited and only one decent bathroom as the en suite is tiny. Bedrooms are a decent size and the beds very comfortable. Very peaceful with the only noise coming from the birds and other wildlife when waking up in the morning. Main gripe would be the wifi which is very poor - lucky to stay connected for more than 10 minutes at any one time and reconnection often takes longer still. VERY FRUSTRATING. Owlswick is located just off the main river and ideally situated for an easy stroll into Horning. We have hired a boat for the week and enjoyed days out on the broads with plenty of choice of places to visit for whole of part days. Would we return to Owlswick, probably not only because of inadequate bathrooms and poor wifi. Otherwise a very enjoyable stay despite the rain today!!

Dear Graham,

Many thank for taking the time to leave a review for your stay at Owlswick. Apologies for the delay in responding.

Sadly, the wifi and phone reception in Norfolk is not always 100% due to the rural location. Some properties have better services than others. If you would like to book an alternative property for next year, we would be happy to help with booking a property with more efficient wifi.

We look forward to seeing you in the future.

Kind Regards

“Lovely village but cottage not quite up to scratch”
Reviewed 14 January 2016 for a stay in December 2015

Eight of us went away to Owlswick cottage over the Christmas week for a holiday break and we could not have picked a nicer village. The locals were welcoming and the pubs were on the whole very good.
The cottage did disappoint on a number of levels though.
No wifi coverage at all in the house, mainly due to the thatched roof covered in chicken wire making it a perfect Faraday Cage and even going outside did not alleviate the problem. Mobile coverage was non existent in the cottage as well.
The overall cleanliness of the property was poor when we arrived and a couple oof us went off to the nearby Tesco to buy bleach etc. to clean the very dirty toilets.
Water pressure also an issue and a shower could only be taken safely if you warned all other guests to leave taps/toilets alone for a while.
One of the mattresses had springs coming through so clearly not checked properly - poor service for a £1500 rental cost.
Although there were 4 double bedrooms, when all guests were in the lounge it was just too crowded with insufficient chairs to sit and watch TV etc. Not a problem in the summer but in winter when it's cold outside it is an issue.
Overall a nice holiday and I would return to Horning but not this cottage unless cleaning standards improve and the few issues are dealt with.
