Chek Jawa is a must visit if you find yourself on Pulau Ubin, but I suggest you hire a bike to get there.

The habitat is well maintained with excellent walkways, including a coastal track. There is a good selection of wildlife including the usual mangrove crab, lobster and mudskipper. We were also 'lucky' enough to spot a juvenile cobra as well! You can usually spot some wild pig in the vicinity, but do not approach..

Because they are there.

Why go to Chek Jawa?

You wouldn't go out of your way for it. But you won't have to as you are already on Pulau Ubin and it is 80m down the road.

Top surveyor. Solid jetty. Imaginatively named island.

Make a learning journey to the interesting Chek Jawa wetlands, where you can learn about thhe habitat of a variety of plants and creatures characteristic of a mangrove ecosystem..

A boardwalk takes you right round the mangrove area, and the best time to visit is when the tide is low.

Bring your binoculars and ascend the seven-storey Jejawi Tower, where you can spot rare mgratory birds.

Visit the Visitors' Centre (a large colonial bungalow) for more interesting facts about Chek Jawa. The view out to sea is rather nice.

No admission charges to Chek Jawa, though the 15min boat ride from Changi Point costs S$3 per person per trip (2017).

Bring a hat.

We cycled around the island and stopped by Chek Jawa and took a stroll. Managed to catch some wild boars feeding at the entrance and also saw some mudskippers but actually was hoping to see a bit more animals. Nonetheless, it's a good place to visit if one wants to get away from the hustle of city life and they have done a good job constructing walkways to make it easy to stroll around the area.

After touring bustling Singapore, the following day I pushed off on a “bumboat” for a 20 minute crossing to Pulau Ubin, an experience of stepping back in time to what Singapore once looked like. On this eco-island I was greeted by herons, kingfishers, straw-headed bulbuls, mudskippers and even wild boar. I climbed to the peak of Puaka Hill and, as eagles floated in the sky above the island jungle, I could see the juxtaposition of Singapore’s skyscrapers across the watery straits. Amazing!
