Hike pieces or parts of the unique specular trail with views of the second deepest U.S. lake and take in the wildlife, tree species, birds and plants. Trail is maintained of some degree and you will meet lots of folks along the way, see the fire scares that have taken place in recent years, a winter hike on the trail might be a challenge to be sure

If you’ve ever dreamt of hiking for an hour or two for solace in the tall pines of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, this is your chance. The vistas are magnificent. It doesn’t get any better than that!

We were advised by locals to take this walk above all others. It was fantastic.

We drove up Blackwood Canyon Road, past the end of the bitumen. Park near the bathroom where the Pacific Crest Trail crosses the road. Plenty of space including picnic table and grass camping spot for those walking the Pacific Crest Trail as well as the Tahoe Rim Trail.

We walked north west and then north. Views are spectacular, both of the mountain peaks and at times Lake Tahoe (down Blackwood Canyon). Admire the alpine flowers. Walk for 2, 3 or 4 Km and then return. The track is undulating, but the major climb is done in the car driving to the pass. We saw children about 8 years old, so not to strenuous.

Take care with the weather forecast. Pick a sunny day, but be prepared for a sudden cool change. Be cautious crossing some slopes in windy conditions. Use sunscreen and take enough water and food for your planned walk.

Our efforts were insignificant compared with those walking the PCT. We saw more long distance walkers than day tripers.

We did the Tahoe Meadows portion of this trail. It was beautiful as the Fall colors really highlighted the meadow. The trail was easy and accessible and the signage was interesting. We parked along the side of Mt. Rose Highway.

Wow, what a great hiking trail. Believe me the downhill is a little quicker than the uphill. But the path is well kept and it's beautiful. I trail was steep in spots but it's not super difficult. I would recommend this hike for anyone. Beautiful.
