We did 3 separate little 5 - 7 milers in this area in the early mornings before the sleepy-heads in cabin knew we were missing. Plenty of parking available at 8 am, but the place was packed by 10 am.
Hiking up above 267, generally east-bound, it took quite a while to leave the traffic noise behind. The first real payoff is the lovely "picnic rocks" side trail. Very peaceful, GREAT lake views, and interesting rocks.
From 267, just north of Brockway summit, you can drive up Martis Peak road to intercept the Trail higher up, and, as a bonus, drive or hike up to the fire watch point, just shy of Martis peak. More amazing views, including the lake, Northstar, Truckee, and even Mt Lassen. The views from the firewatch are better than the peak itself. We had the good fortune to run into CalFire crewman Ryan as he unlocked the gate to drive up to his post. That guy loves his job. Be aware: the first quarter mile of pavement on Martis Pk Rd off of 267 is dreadful, but we made it fine in a regular Mazda3 wagon. The rest of the pavement up to the peak is just fine, if narrow.
