It is one of the oldest restored theatres in North America.
Like stepping into an exquisite Victorian theatre with a great stage plus hanging vines as part of the decor.

Saw 2 movies here, one at the Elgin and one at the Winter Garden for the TIFF. I've never seen such a spectacular place. The Winter Garden has these leaves on the ceiling and it's simply gorgeous. Loved it. Sound and accoustics lovely. Wonderful.

I love classic movie theaters, so I was in heaven here. We took the tour, and it was great. It's amazing the detail that they went into to restore the two theaters. What is also great was that they were able to add so much to make it a viable performance space without hurting the classic feel of the space. See some of the other reviews for more of the history and description. It's certainly well worth the price of admission.

I saw Prima Donna by Rufus Wainright there. It was a beautiful theatre with good sound almost all around.

These are the last surviving Edwardian stacked theatres in the world--although to be precise they opened in 1913. The Winter Garden is an atmospheric theatre designed to resemble a forest. Seven stories below is the sumptuous Elgin theatre that glows with gold and silver foil on beaux-arts plaster work. Tours are available; these are grand rooms not to be missed by anyone interested in fine theatre interiors.
The Elgin/Winter Garden is close to the Eaton Centre, Toronto's Old City Hall (1899), and the financial district. The Hudson Bay Store diagonally opposite is a fine Romanesque Revival building from 1908.
