I was concerned about staying at this hotel after reading some of the negative reviews, but we had an absolutely lovely stay. While others mentioned the noise, we didn't experience that at all (perhaps it was because we were there mid-week) and we found the room (201) just delightful - a fireplace, comfortable bed, and lots of beautiful antiques made it a distinctive, charming setting. The location is great, and the breakfast buffet offered a range of choices. We thought it was a great value. If you're looking for a predictable, modern hotel, you should probably choose a chain. But for something with lots of charm (may I repeat - a gas fireplace!) and a cozy stay, this is a great choice.

First thing you should know is that there is a bar next door. This bar INCREASES the volume of their music from 12 to 2am. So, unless you can sleep through "boom boom boom" beats, or you do not go to bed before 2am anyway, this place is not for you.

Aside from that, the only good part is that the bed was comfortable. Other than that, the breakfast is minimalistic, the rooms are mediocre, there are a number of stairs to take to your room (if mobility is a concern), and the staff isn't the best (I had a message from an outside party, and I didn't get the message until 2 days later when I was checking out!).
I cannot say that I recommend this place.

The hotel is very outdated, not clean and very noisy due to the 5 bars right next to the hotel. The room is ok. Breakfast is simple but fine. Breakfast is in the room where one of the 5 bars is. It is really dirty here. Floor covering that has been around forever, sticky bar and tables, strong alcohol, musty smell. If it was a cheap backpack hotel, all fine. But this is definitely not worth the price. I do not recommend going here, it is not worth the money.

Perhaps upstairs rooms are clean, airy and welcoming, but mine was a basement room with tiny windows and a claustrophobic atmosphere. A heating fan blew gusts of air directly over me all night, with loud noise. The cups and glasses all sported dust, grime, and spots suspiciously resembling someone else’s toothpaste.

When we booked the Madison for our 3 day, two night stay, we only booked it for the reasonable rate we found on Trivago/booking.com. We were not 100% sure of what it would be like.
Well, it was a wonderful comfortable stay. From the first contact with the hotel, to the departing contact as we checked out, there were no negative feelings in any way. My first contact, I called to confirm our reservation and was greeted with the most pleasant and welcoming voice on the other end. Made me look forward our arrival.
Then the trek to the room. We went into this reservation knowing there was no elevator, so we're prepared for the work out to the room with our luggage. We most certainly could have had someone carry our bags for us, so this was a Non-issue.
They clearly advise all visitors to there website that it is not wheel chair accessible. And no elevators. So people, if you complain about that, it is on you, not the hotel.
The feeling of this hotel is like you are going home to your grandparent's homestead. It is warm and rustic, with antique furniture and the old century surroundings.
Our room was very clean with modern shower and bathroom facilities. We had a Standard King room . The bed was older but very comfortable and had many pillows to choose from to find you perfect comfort fit. The standard rooms do not have a mini fridge so we just, got creative and filled a bag with ice and kept any parishable snacks we had cold.
The food, was very good and so reasonable. They have daily specials in the pub next door, which is owned together with the hotel. These specials are for food and Beverage...yes folks, it is a building with 4-5 different rooms(bars) to choose from. All with the same specials and menu. Where can you go and get bar shots or domestic bottles of beer for $3.50 and Chicken Parmesan meal for $7.00 ... The Madison on Thursday nights!!.
We would not hesitate to recommend this place for anyone interested in visiting Toronto. We were able to get to all of the places of interest in the downtown area within 15-20 min. Via a Subway. The Spadina subway station is just around the corner. Like any Toronto location, it is expensive to park, so we hopped onto the Go Train and took the Subway there, leaving our car at the Go parking lot in our home station.
Did I mention the staff? From the font desk, to the waitresses, to the bar tenders, the security staff and the Bar and hotel Managers, they were all so amazing, making us feel like we were a part of their family.

Room tip: If you have problems doing stairs just make sure you ask for a room on the first floor.
