This museum is actually a very large home at 375 Deschambault
in St. Boniface. It reminds me of Manitoba's own Anne of Green Gables because it mirrors Gabrielle's experiences as their family made it's way through the poor times and not so poor times in this oasis called St. Boniface. Everyone should visit Gabrielle's home as it speaks to you as you walk around and see the environment that inspired her Stree of Riches and many other books.

Had always wanted to see the home I had read about in Street of Riches and even after it had become a museum and open to the public it took several years. Gabrielle Roy has been one of my favourite authors for years since I first saw in the mid eighties the movie Tramp at the Door and I went on a reading binge reading everything she had ever written.
The house has been restored to what it would have been like in her childhood and the guides have been well briefed and were quite informative throughout the home. In the different rooms there is also excerpts from her writings and photos so after the guided tour I still spent another hour in the home on my own. Even if you had never read any of her stories or books I still think that the tour would be interesting especially with the guide that I had.

It is a really nice museum in the house of Gabrielle-Roy in the heart of old St. Boniface. It sure gives you a glimpse of the past.

As far as I know this is one of just two Manitoba author's houses that are now museums (The other is the Margaret Laurence House in Neepawa). It's interesting that Gabrielle Roy may be more well known in Quebec than she is in her home province of Manitoba, but I think more English-speaking Canadians should celebrate her remarkable literary legacy. The house itself is a pleasant 3-story 100 year old home in St. Boniface, which at the time was a separate city from Winnipeg and still represents the centre of the Franco-Manitoban community. We had a remarkable tour led by a very friendly and informative young woman from Quebec. Tours are offered in both English and French and the admission fee is very inexpensive. The house has been beautifully restored and furnished with period furniture and numerous Roy artifacts, such as the typewriter she used to write her most famous novel The Tin Flute. Roy wrote about this home in the book Street of Riches (Rue Deschaumbault). I learned a lot and encourage anyone interested in Canadian literature, French culture, St. Boniface history, or even architecture to visit this hidden gem in Winnipeg. Loved it!
