Owner description: Completed in 1890, Craigdarroch is a stately home built by the pioneering couple Robert and Joan Dunsmuir, who at the time of its construction were the wealthiest people in British Columbia. Called a 'castle' due to its imposing exterior, the luxurious interior has been restored to look as though the visitor is a guest of Mrs. Dunsmuir during the 1890s. It features beautiful woodwork, unique Victorian artifacts, and an impressive collection of original stained glass, all within a pleasant walk from downtown Victoria.

Having not been to "the Castle" in over 20 years, it was wonderful to come back and see all the work that has been done and completed. The workmanship is amazing , the rooms, halls and truly stunning staircases will fill you will wonder and you can imagine going to a party there as you climb the stairs. Having volunteers to help you as you went along on the tour were a nice touch and very informative. Seeing the plans for the next few years in the kitchen area are exciting and make me want to come back to visit again soon. Make sure you got to the top turret and admire the views.

Definitely a place to spend a few hours. The woodwork was stunning and the architecture was amazing. There was so much to see and we could have gone back a second time and still wouldn't have seen all the unique and interesting things. If you don’t like stairs don’t go, as there are 4 floors. Don't dress too warm as it can get quite hot after climbing 4 flights of stairs.

definitely a place to spend a few ours. the woodwork was stunning and the architecture was amazing. there is a 35 min film that you must watch. there are plenty of stairs to go up so if you are not capable of that then this may not be for you.

Only reason I rated it a 4 is the people taking money are bland and appear they do not like their jobs.Secondly, if you are disabled, there is no accessible means of getting to the floors (4). Don't dress too warm because by the time you reach the fourth floor, you are hot from the climb.

Other than that, this place is lovely with so much history surrounding the castle. I recommend.

To think I have been to Victoria hundreds of times, and just made it to this spectacular site now! The woodwork alone is worth a visit. Notice all the different inlays in the wooden floors. Also, don’t miss the 35 minute film. The pictures are astounding. This is definitely a treasure. If you don’t like stairs don’t go, as there are 4 floors. You have to look up to see the lighting, and the special treats near the ceiling. The Docents are helpful.
